The study of international business is more important than ever. Technological, political and economic developments mean that daily business transactions can be conducted on a global scale, and international managers have added advantages in the employment market.

Studying BSc (Hons) International Business and Management will help equip you to navigate international business challenges through both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. This degree offers core strategic management skills in an international context.

We all know that taking a placement year will boost your employability – it’s what makes Aston University graduates some of the most employable in the country. It’s for this reason that we encourage every student to take one. The placement year gives you the chance to put theory into practice, gain relevant work experience, and develop professional and transferable skills.

The placement year is compulsory for BSc (Hons) International Business and Management students. International students can request permission to opt out of the placement year, but we strongly recommend that it is completed where possible.

For this course only, home students must undertake the compulsory placement year outside of the UK.

What you will learn

The degree will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the various functions of management, alongside the opportunity to specialise in areas of business that interest you, preparing you for a successful management career. Your lectures will provide you with essential theories and underlying concepts with more specialised engagement in seminars and groupwork activities.

First year

In your first year, you will study a wide range of management related subjects, designed to ensure you have a broad foundation and knowledge of management. You will consider the economic, financial, human and legal issues managers deal with, and learn the tools and techniques they use to resolve them.

Second year

From the second year onwards, you will have greater flexibility to tailor your degree, specialising in areas of your choice. You will apply core theories of management to given scenarios, explore alternative solutions and provide recommendations. 

Placement year

The Aston University placement year forms an integral part of your educational journey and gives you the chance to put theory into practice, gain relevant work experience, and develop professional and transferable skills. You will learn key business and management theory and practices and formulate a business strategy. You will also recognise and evaluate leadership, reflecting on your own and others behaviour and competencies, apply innovative thinking in problem-solving to produce clear, structured, and evidence-based solutions and produce effective communications of business plans, proposals and solutions in a variety of media.

Placement year modules

You will spend your third year on placement. You will be fully supported throughout the process by our award-winning Careers and Placements team.

For the BSc (Hons) International Business and Management programme, the placement year is compulsory for home students and it must be taken outside the country of origin. Although not compulsory for international students, students with overseas status, from outside the UK, can complete this part of the programme in the UK.

Final year outcomes

On successful completion of the final year, you will be able to:

  • Apply a systematic understanding of key international business and management theory and practices to the formulation of business and management strategy.
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of at least one area of international business and management, which is informed by the research and practice at the forefront of that discipline. Critically apply that knowledge to original business scenarios.
  • Initiate and implement problem-solving; produce, clear, structured and evidence-based solutions to business and management problems that consider multiple perspectives.
  • Appraise critically intercultural factors and their impact on business and management decision-making; show intercultural sensitivity when working across cultures.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in constructing and communicating arguments using a variety of media.
  • Reflect critically on your own and others’ behaviour and competencies; develop plans for future development and increased effectiveness at work.
  • Articulate and evaluate personal and organisational responsibilities towards multiple stakeholders in terms of professional ethics, accountability and sustainability.

The University also accepts the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate/BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and BTEC Level 3 National Diploma/BTEC Level 3 Diploma for entry onto degree programmes, provided that they are studied in combination with other qualifications that are equivalent to three full A2 Levels.

31 points overall in the IB diploma with grades 5,5,5 in 3 higher level subjects.

You must also have Standard Level grade 4 in Mathematics and grade 5 in English Language.

We accept the QAA-recognised Access Diploma which must consist of 45 credits at Level 3.

You must obtain a minimum of 21 credits at distinction and the rest must be at merit or distinction.

Please note that we do not accept the English and Maths components within the Access qualification and you must meet the GCSE entry requirement.

Year 1 entry: We may consider applicants for year 1 entry who are undertaking a first year degree elsewhere. You must meet the GCSEs and A Level (or equivalent) requirements as listed. In order to be considered you will need to submit a UCAS application as we do not accept direct applications and this must include an academic reference.
Year 2 entry: Please note that second year transfers are not part of the standard admissions process and is up to the discretion of the admissions team and tutor. Applications are only considered if there is space on that year of the programme. Typically, applicants for second year entry must meet the GCSEs and A Level (or equivalent) requirements as listed. Alongside this you must have successfully passed (or be expected to pass) your first year with 120 credits on an equivalent programme at another recognised university with very similar module content. The equivalency of the programme is reviewed by the Admissions Tutor and you will be required to provide an official copy of the programme specification of this. In order to be considered you will need to submit a UCAS application as we do not accept direct applications and this must include an academic reference.
Year 3 entry onwards: We will not be able to consider any application for Year 3 or final year.

Assessment

Assessment is provided through a mix of coursework and examinations. In addition, you will also be assessed on your portfolio that will be produced as part of your placement experience. You will reflect on your experience and evidence your analysis of a situation identified within the placement organisation which draws on learning from your previous studies.
