Data mining and web analytics (BNM861)

Term 2 (Jan - Apr)

Module Aims:

Applications of data mining and business analytics are highly useful in today's competitive market. In this module several case studies of well-known data mining techniques are used; e.g. shopping basket analysis such as Tesco club card, credit card fraud detection, predicting stock market returns, risk analysis in banking, web analytics and social network analysis including Facebook and Twitter.

Module Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Know the advanced techniques of business intelligent and its application to business decision making
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the data and resources available on the web of relevance to business intelligence and enable students to access such structured and unstructured data
  • Learn advanced data mining methods such as neural networks, classifications, etc..
  • Critically analyse the data to real-world problems
  • Apply the practical experience and the advanced data mining algorithms needed to reveal patterns and valuable information hidden in large data sets

    Module Aims

    Understand different approaches to structure a consulting intervention. Understand and experience what is good and what is bad consulting practice. Be better prepared to carry out successful consulting projects within organisations, either as an external investigator or as a line manager given a one-off problem-solving task.

    Module Learning Outcomes:

    On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

    • Evaluate the trends affecting the global consulting industry.
    • Appraise a complex situation using problem structuring.
    • Prepare a soft systems analysis of a complex, ambiguous problem situation.
    • Recommend the most appropriate consulting approach for a particular organisational challenge.
