Industry Clubs
Our exclusive industry clubs allow organisations to build long-term strategic partnerships with Aston University and our students.
Due to increasing industry demand to collaborate with our departments, in 2016 we launched Industry Clubs: a holistic strategic partnership between industry and academia.
We currently run three Industry Clubs: Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering and Design, and Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. Limiting the number of external organisations joining our Clubs enables us to work closely with each partner, ensuring they are matched with the most suitable students and staff.
Club members benefit from a bespoke offering to help to raise their profile through a range of services and activities that includes:
- Opportunity to enrich and influence Aston’s curriculum, based on your requirements
- Direct communication with students and academics
- Exclusive attendance at events where top students and researchers present their work
- Support with placement student and graduate recruitment
- Proactive academic support to formulate proposals for student and research projects
- Priority access to Beautiful Canoe, Aston University’s student-run software company (exclusive to Computer Science club members)
- Opportunities to put forward research proposals as well as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs)
Brand-building opportunities
In addition, we offer a range of brand-building opportunities including:
- Guest lecturing opportunities in targeted timetabled sessions of undergraduate and postgraduate modules. Our team will help you identify suitable modules to contribute to and advise on appropriate content.

- A place on presentation panels during student presentations, offering real-world advice
- Exclusive attendance at key student events throughout the academic calendar

he Industry Club offers an important opportunity for students to work on projects under supervision by members of industry. Students work to develop solutions to the ongoing challenges the company faces. As a result, skills acquired during the project go beyond the core engineering knowledge giving students the important edge when transitioning to employment.

- Computer Science
The Computer Science Department at Aston has an outstanding reputation for delivering applied research, winning over £1.4 million of research funding annually.
The department was ranked 4th out of 107 institutions for Graduate Prospects (Complete University Guide 2018), and all BSc (Hons) Computer Science degrees are accredited for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status – the British Computer Society’s Chartered qualification.

- Mechanical Engineering and Design
The Mechanical Engineering and Design group at Aston is at the forefront of engineering education employing the modern CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) teaching philosophy.
We currently run four degree programmes:
- BEng / MEng Mechanical Engineering
- BEng Design Engineering
- BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- BSc Product Design, with an emphasis on either Industrial, Transport or Management
Students are exposed to problem-based learning activities from the start of their academic journey, requiring them to work in collaborative teams. They are challenged to Design, Build and Test a series of engineered products using their theoretical knowledge to underpin projects, resulting in consistently outstanding achievements from individual major project outcomes.
With a considerable range of collective knowledge, the combined group’s research interests are cutting-edge, diverse and aligned to key themes such as Healthcare and the Environment. Themes include biomaterials and medical devices, sustainable design, holistic energy management and thermal equipment, smart manufacturing and automation, through to user-centred design and enhancing the design of essential products for developing economies.
- Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry
Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry (CEAC) at Aston has an outstanding reputation – both for high-quality teaching and research. Our Chemistry courses were ranked 2nd out of 59 institutions for Student Satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2020), and our Chemical Engineering courses were ranked 12th in the UK (Guardian league Table 2020). Both the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Royal Society of Chemistry have given our programmes full accreditation

The department has an influential culture in delivering applied research, winning over £1M of research funding annually. The most recent Research Excellence Framework, which assesses the research quality in UK higher education has ranked over 60% of the research we submitted as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’. Notably, in the category of Impact, 100% of our research was classed as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’. We have an extensive network of industry research collaborators and rank 1st nationally in winning Knowledge Transfer Partnership funding
