Aston University Product Design students showcased their final year projects last week at the Aston Inspired design show. A sustainable iron that reinvents the traditional energy sapping product and a new take on an all-electric motorbike that points to a new trend in biking were among some of the wide range of mechanical, electrical engineering designs showcased at the exhibition in the Great Hall at Aston University campus in Birmingham.
The event was an ideal opportunity to meet the next generation of industrialists and discover the wealth of creative designs and innovative engineering from Aston University.
The show featured the 2013 Shell Eco-Marathon Concept Car project where final year students were challenged to design a vehicle that travels the furthest distance using the least amount of energy. The project promotes the use of sustainable energy technologies with this year’s car having a zero emission hydrogen powered fuel cell. Last year’s team of engineers and designers won the Eco Design Award: The car won Shell’s Eco-Design Award for pushing the boundaries of sustainable driving and car design.
Members of Aston’s Formula Student Team also showcased their latest race car - a carbon fibre composite framework designed for strength and to minimise weight.
Jamie Rosenfeld, a Product Design student said; "I have been taught throughout my university degree to understand what is missing from the market and how best to implement it as a product with a consistent industrial focus. This has included working in groups on several different projects, which has helped me personally with my communication and teamwork skills.
Being involved in the organisation of Aston Inspired has been challenging but we are hoping for an extremely successful show that truly demonstrates the hard work of all the product design and engineering students."
