EBRI funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Aston University at a cost of over £16 million was launched in October 2013. The state-of-the-art facility is a hub of technology and research excellence in the development of second generation biofuels produced from wastes and non-food crops.
Professor Bridgwater has considerable experience and knowledge in bioenergy, having founded Aston University’s Bioenergy Research Group in 1987. His name has been closely associated with fast pyrolysis, a novel technology to transform biomass to liquid through thermochemical conversion.
He leads a team of specialist researchers focusing on the scientific and technological aspects of biomass production, conversion and utilisation of products for renewable power, heat, transport fuels, hydrogen and chemicals.
During his career at Aston, Professor Bridgwater has received several awards in recognition of his contributions to the development, implementation and promotion of bioenergy technologies around the world. His research papers have been cited tens of thousands of times and his name is well known in the global bioenergy community.
