Thriving as an international student

Moving to a new country to study can feel overwhelming, but Aston University made my transition to life in the UK much easier. This time last year, I wasn’t confident speaking English, but Aston supported me with tailored one-to-one sessions that helped me build both my language skills and confidence.

The Foundation Year was a game changer — it gave me the academic foundation and life skills I needed to succeed in my engineering degree. During that time, I was also awarded the Women in Engineering Scholarship, which really stood out to me. Aston’s dedication to supporting women in engineering and promoting diversity showed me that this university genuinely values inclusivity.

Throughout my student journey, I’ve felt truly supported. The Student Welfare team has been incredible, offering encouragement and practical help through support sessions that made adapting to life away from home much smoother.

Aston’s focus on social justice has also inspired me, with student societies at the Aston Students’ Union leading campaigns on equality, diversity, and inclusion. From advocating for racial and gender equality, to championing LGBTQ+ rights and disability inclusion, the campus has a community that cares. I’ve been able to join various social campaigns, volunteer, and engage in meaningful ways that align with my values.

Life in Birmingham and beyond

Birmingham is the perfect place to live and study — it’s vibrant, diverse and full of opportunities. When I’m not on campus, I love exploring the city and beyond. From relaxing in Digbeth to taking trips to places like Llandudno, Dartmoor, and Cambridge, there’s always something exciting to discover.

On campus, the library is my go-to spot for quiet study sessions, while the Woodcock Sports Centre is perfect for staying active. The Students’ Union and the lake area are ideal when I need some personal time to de-stress. Aston truly provides a well-rounded university experience.
