Medical Bioscience (Singapore)

Our Medical Biosciences (Singapore) BSc course is delivered as a partnership between Aston University and EAIM, Singapore. The course will equip you with the training, professional skills and technical knowledge required for a rewarding career in biomedical science, or in research in the allied health professions. 

Throughout this course, you will study a range of subjects that are essential to understanding human health and disease. You’ll discover more about the role biomedical scientists play in healthcare, in terms of their knowledge and innovative thinking. 

You will develop your knowledge, skills and understanding, as well as gain invaluable real-world insight, through developing your own research project, which will give you the platform for a career that saves and transforms lives. 

Start date information

This qualification offers you the flexibility to begin your studies in October, January, April, or July each year and, on successful completion, you will graduate with an honours degree awarded by Aston University.  

This course is delivered over eight blocks of study and allows you to combine study and your working life. 

 Each module is worth 30 credits and is delivered over a 3-month block period, which means that the course can be completed in 24 months.   Blocked practicals are managed by EAIM during the month of June and January

Stage 1

All students joining the course will receive approved prior learning/recognised prior learning credit for stage 1 which is based on previous qualifications and experience, allowing direct entry into stage 2.  

Stage 2

In stage 2, you will:

• Develop knowledge about the physiological processes that regulate homeostasis by which the human body maintains a relatively constant internal environment and the hormonal signalling pathways underpinning this.  
• Have the opportunity to explore disease mechanisms  
• Develop biomedical research skills that are relevant to biomedical scientists which will help to enhance your employability. 
• Gain in-depth knowledge of the physiological processes that regulate homeostasis by which the human body maintains a relatively constant internal environment, and the hormonal signalling pathways that underpin this.  
• Develop a framework for understanding clinical genetics and will develop experience in the application of this process to human disease.

Mechanisms of Pathology

This module will provide a broad overview of the factors that cause pathology in disease.  You will gain an understanding of the principles underlying pathology of a variety of diseases. This module will also develop your knowledge of how the immune system responds to infection or damage, in terms of beneficial and detrimental effects. You will also gain an understanding of the variety of pathogens and mechanisms that cause disease.

Cell Signalling and Physiology

This module will give you an in-depth understanding of the physiological processes that regulate homeostasis by which the human body maintains a relatively constant internal environment and the hormonal signalling pathways underpinning this.

Clinical Genetics and Human Disease

You will develop a framework for understanding clinical generics and experience in applying it to human disease and explore disease mechanisms.  You will also develop key research skills that are relevant to biomedical scientists which will help to enhance your employability.

Clinical Sciences

The prevention, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease is heavily dependent upon the results generated in diagnostic pathology laboratories. This module contains core material which directly reflects the competency required to practice as Biomedical Scientist. It aims to provide an overview of the three main pathology disciplines; Haematology & Transfusion Science, Clinical Biochemistry and Cellular Pathology. In doing this, the module will provide an overview haematological systems, biochemical processes and cells and tissues in health, as well as discuss the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of haematological, biochemical and pathological disorders.

Professional Development for Biomedical Scientists

This will provide you with the opportunity to develop a range of research and translational skills that will equip you to undertake scientific careers and demonstrate professional behaviour.

Research Project Preparation

The research project will provide you with an opportunity to prepare for an individual research project where you will gain in-depth knowledge of a specific biosciences-related area and provide you with good experience in practical techniques relevant to the area of biosciences. 

The research project will:

• Provide an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a biosciences-related area.  
• Enable you to experience of practical techniques relevant to biosciences.  
• Prepare students to undertake an individual research project.  

Cancer Biology

To provide an enhanced understanding of the biology of cancer including its nomenclature, causes, metastasis and the basis for conventional and novel therapies and development of resistance.

Clinical and Food Microbiology

This module gives an overview of microbiology and infectious disease within clinical and food and hygiene settings and gives you an understanding of the biomedical scientist in the isolation of pathogens. You will also develop your awareness of antimicrobial resistances (AMR) within a range of communities through public engagement. 

Immunology and Inflammation

The aim of this module is to provide advanced theoretical knowledge of the role of the immune system in health and disease.

Research Project

The research project will provide you with the experience of generating, selecting, analysing, interpreting, and presenting scientific data.

The content in this course is provided by Aston University academics, and is available via a virtual learning environment, giving you access to a comprehensive range of study materials, up-to-date key texts, scientific journals, e-journals, databases and more.

You will also be supported by qualified tutors at EAIM, where a new blended teaching method makes use of innovative learning methods such as:

• Gamification
• Short videos
• Bite-sized information under each learning outcome

Typical offers:

• Diploma: Diploma in Biomedical Science or related Life Sciences from the Polytechnics in Singapore with a minimum 2.0 GPA
• Proficiency in English Language: Minimum EASB/ETEDP Level 3/ IELTS 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component
• GCSE in English Language or English Literature at level C or above.

Entry will be at the start of stage 2, and will be via recognised prior learning of an approved programme of study at Diploma level.

Students will normally be in employment in a relevant setting.

This Programme is designed for students who primarily study and work in Singapore and the surrounding areas.

For International students: The International students fee is a fixed annual fee for the duration of the Programme, except whilst on placement when a placement year fee applies.

Assessment is through a range of methods, such as coursework, and an end of study block delivery.  Exams generally take the format of an unseen essay, short answer, and multiple-choice questions in silico practical assessments.
