Course outline and modules

The International Foundation Programme in Business at Aston Business School is a one year course that guides you through the processes involved in creating, sustaining and growing a successful business.

It is designed for International students who do not have the required GCE A levels or equivalent qualifications for entry to business-related Aston University undergraduate degree programmes. The course is equivalent to the UK’s Year 13.

You will receive support in professional and study skills, as well as being taught at Aston University by Aston University staff involved in research and practice.

This is a transition programme which aims to consolidate and build on your skills and knowledge from further education to support your progression to a university environment.

This programme will give you access to all degrees in Aston’s Business School, which include:

  • BSc Accounting for Management
  • BSc Business and Management
  • BSc Business Computing and IT
  • BSc Economics and Management
  • BSc Finance
  • BSc Human Resource Management
  • BSc International Business and Economics
  • BSc International Business and Management
  • BSc International Relations (Joint Honours)
  • BSc Marketing
  • LLB Law.
     

You can also gain access to some degrees in Aston’s School of Engineering and Applied Science:

  • BSc Logistics with Supply Chain Management
  • BSc Logistics with Transport Management
  • BSc Logistics with Purchasing Management.

Course duration

  • Foundation programme only: 1 year 
  • Foundation and 3 year BSc : 4 years (LLB only)
  • Foundation and 4 year BSc (including placement or year abroad): 5 years.

During your foundation year you’ll have excellent support from academics, while group projects will give you the chance to meet new people, make new friends and build a network of peers who will share your university journey. Entry requirements

Academic and Age Requirements

You must have attained excellent grades in your secondary school leaving certificate (Attestat or Year 12) or equivalent. Please use the link below to view standard entry requirements by country

Applicants who will be under 18 years of age at the start of the programme in September will be considered on individual basis upon receiving parental consent and evidence of a UK based guardian. 

English Language Requirements

You will need a valid IELTS result from an approved UKVI test centre. We require 5.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.0 in each test).      
     
If you only hold the minimum listed above, you will be required to undertake English language modules as part of the programme. If you already meet the minimum 1st year English language entry requirements for your chosen degree programme, your English Language modules may be substituted with alternative modules.

Progression Requirements (for entry to the 1st year of the BSc programme)

40% in Foundation Programme to achieve progression onto all ABS programmes.

Plus, for progression onto specific study areas, you need to have the following:

Minimum 65% or equivalent in Mathematics in your secondary school leaving certificate for the following programmes:

  • Economics programmes
  • Finance
  • Business Analytics

The Academic Language Skills modules are taught by CELCA (Centre for English Language and Communication at Aston) which has a long tradition of teaching excellence in the field of English as a Foreign Language.

Progression

If you pass all the modules at the required grades you are guaranteed a place on one of the degree programmes listed previously.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a variety of methods including written coursework, exams and presentations.

Our foundation programmes are designed to give you a range of transferable and practical skills to succeed within your further studies and, ultimately, your chosen career. We make extensive use of group working and presentations to prepare you for the reality of working life. This experience will develop your teamworking and negotiating skills.

Fees

Tuition fees (2020/21): £14,200

Tuition fees are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) to take account of the University’s increased costs of delivering the Programme. When undertaking a placement year a placement year fee applies.

You can choose to then study one of our business programmes with an integrated placement year, providing you with invaluable work experience, and the chance to progress onto a Masters programme.

How will I study on the International Foundation Business Course?

Students will receive timetables that detail the room and time of each subject. Each module will be taught via a lecture that delivers course content to all students, as well as seminars in smaller groups to provide the more focused skills required for each module. Each module will have a total of four hours of teaching a week.
