Studied via via blended learning (online and in-person sessions), this standalone module provides a comprehensive exploration of hearing therapy, focusing on the development of counselling and communication skills essential for audiology practice. Ideal for enhancing your ability to support patients with chronic hearing loss, it deepens your understanding of how effective therapeutic relationships can facilitate informed decision-making and long-term patient well-being.

The indicative content of the module includes techniques for counseling individuals with hearing loss, strategies for effective communication and methods for supporting patients in managing chronic conditions. It also covers the role of therapeutic relationships in sustaining positive changes in patients' lives.

This is a level 7 module (equivalent level of study to a postgraduate or masters degree) worth 30 credits.

Objectives and outcomes

  1. Builds your knowledge base in audiology to effectively support patients with a wide range of hearing problems.
  2. Enables you to develop and use counselling and communication skills to help individuals with hearing loss make informed choices about managing chronic hearing conditions.
  3. Enables you to understand how to sustain change and development through effective helping relationships.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Understand the key communication skills required to enable patients to choose audiological interventions.
  • Describe appropriate health status measures and their function.
  • Describe the stages of change that affect audiological rehabilitation and their influences on patient behaviour.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the limits and boundaries of personal competence in applying counselling skills in relationships with patients.

The United Kingdom government has confirmed that European Union (EU), other European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals commencing academic courses in England from August 2021 will no longer be charged the same tuition rates as UK students.

Tuition fees for students are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) to take account of the University’s increased costs of delivering the Programme. Any such increase shall always be in accordance with the law. When undertaking a placement year, a placement year fee applies.

  • This course is delivered via blended learning. You will access learning materials for general study, revision and assessment via our virtual learning environment, Blackboard. This platform allows you to access a comprehensive range of study materials, scientific journals, e-journals, databases and much more

  • Assessment
    This module includes two written assignments, each worth 50% of your final grade. The first is a 2000-word critical analysis of audiological practice, due 6 weeks after the unit ends. The second is a 2000-word reflection on a 15-minute video demonstrating counselling skills, due 8 weeks after the unit ends. Formative feedback will be provided electronically within 3 weeks of submission.
