Studied via blended learning (online and in-person sessions), this standalone module offers a detailed overview of haematology and transfusion science, emphasising the pathophysiology of blood disorders and clinical data interpretation. Ideal for topping up your degree to become a registered Biomedical Scientist or advancing your professional development, it enhances your understanding of diagnosing and managing blood disorders.
The module covers the structure, function and production of blood cells; normal haemostasis; and the diagnosis and investigation of anaemias, haematological malignancies and bleeding and thrombotic disorders. It also includes haematological techniques for disease screening and monitoring. In transfusion science, it addresses red cell antigens, immune-mediated blood cell destruction and the preparation, storage and selection of blood components, including potential adverse effects.
This is a level 5 module (equivalent level of study to a foundation degree or Diploma of Higher Education) worth 10 credits.
