Martyn Thomas, Executive Apprenticeship MBA apprentice and Specsavers
Martyn’s story

“Through my MBA I’ll gain an improved financial understanding and a better business head to make effective decisions when running my businesses. Should I decide to one day relinquish my role in this area of business having a recognised business qualification could allow me to work elsewhere.”

Ashley Hodgson, Commercial Finance Manager at Computershare and Executive Apprenticeship MBA
Ashley’s story

“I decided to study for an MBA as part of my continuous professional development. As my background is rooted in the workplace rather than academically, this would allow me to build on my accountancy qualification to give me a more rounded view of strategic thinking and develop my leadership skills as I continue my career progression.”

Salla Virman, Executive Apprenticeship MBA apprentice at Arts Council England
Salla’s story

“In addition to a recognised qualification, I am hoping to gain new knowledge, experiences, expertise in my field and business contacts. I am hoping the studies together with the Aston Edge professional development will develop me as a leader and thinker through positive challenges.”

Learning, teaching and assessment

Learning and teaching

The course is delivered through blended learning. You will attend two study days per module on campus at Aston University where you will learn through lectures and interactive workshops. This is also a chance to network with fellow business leaders from a wide range of organisations. Face-to-face study sessions give you the opportunity to enrich your learning through discussion of current business issues.
Most teaching is delivered through our virtual learning environment, Blackboard, where you can engage with module content, participate in live seminars and communicate with your peers. There is also an extensive online library of content to support your studies. Live sessions typically occur outside of work time and are recorded to give you the flexibility to balance studies with work and personal commitments.

Assessment

You will be assessed through applied assignments. While there are no traditional examinations, Apprentices will be assessed through work-based projects that give you the opportunity to implement your learning and make a positive impact in your organisation.
In the final year, you will complete a large work-based project requiring you to apply all the theory and skills gained throughout the apprenticeship. The output is a workable solution to an issue their company is facing, delivering real value to the organisation.

The portfolio

Throughout the programme you will curate a personal and professional development portfolio. The purpose of the portfolio is to showcase the skills, knowledge and behaviours developed through the MBA apprenticeship and how you have applied them to you role in the organisation.

You are allocated a dedicated degree apprenticeship coach who will support your learning and skills development. They are there to help you translate your theoretical learning into practical application in the workplace.

The Personal Leadership Focus and The Aston Edge modules will support apprentices with skills development, personal reflection, collaborative working and ultimately, the construction of the portfolio.

The end point assessment

The final stage of the apprenticeship is the end point assessment. You will meet with a representative from Aston University, your employer and an independent assessor from the CMI to discuss your final project and the impact it had on your organisation. They will also review your development journey and how your portfolio has documented it. Finally there will be a short interview allowing you time to share how the programme has helped you to grow and develop. After the interview, based both on your performance and portfolio, the assessors consider what grade should be awarded for the apprenticeship – fail, pass, merit or distinction.
