Building Information Modelling at Aston

Course outline and modules

Building Information Modelling (BIM) involves the development of data rich digital 3D models of buildings and infrastructure throughout the lifecycle, from briefing to operation and ultimately to disposal or reuse.

Learning outcome

This course includes a mixture of virtual sessions and online self-learning via VLE (virtual learning environment). The two easy-to-follow modules for the Autodesk Revit platform and the Autodesk Navisworks Manage are a perfect hands-on accompaniment to learning, aimed at helping all practitioners, whatever their role and skill levels, to quickly become proficient with Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Illustrate the basic concepts, links between data and technologies and the real value that can be delivered during design, construction and operations
  • Interpret the requirements from different parties, the BIM ISO 19650 standards, processes, and technologies
  • Appraise BIM processes and produce project appraisal for design, construction and operation with software tools.

Course delivery and dates

This course includes a mixture of virtual sessions and online self-learning. Totalling 150 hours, with a number of online lectures, workshops and group exercises to assist you in applying your new skills and knowledge to live problems and applications relevant to your business and industry needs.

  • Specialist Virtual Session Activity - 32 hours
  • Independent Activity including the following:
    - Self-Online Learning the Autodesk Revit platform – 24 hours
    - Self-Online Learning the Autodesk Navisworks Manage – 24 hours
    - Preparing an individual portfolio – 70 hours
  • Total learning hours & credits - 150 CPD hours with 15 academic credits 

Face-to-face virtual session days take place over the University academic term and students must attend all virtual sessions online.

Day 1 - 27th September 2024 from 9am to 6pm
Day 2 - 11th October 2024 from 9am to 6pm
Day 3 - 25th October 2024 from 9am to 6pm
Day 4 - 8th November 2024 from 9am to 6pm

Collaboration with industry 

This course has been designed and developed with the BIM Academy, which is a global centre of excellence for BIM and digitisation of the built environment and are currently delivering support in the adoption of BIM for public and private sector clients in UK, Europe, Hong Kong, Canada and Australia.

Accreditation

At the end of the course, you will receive a certificate of completion that awards you 150 hours of Continuing Professional Development under the name of both Aston University and BIM Academy.

Entry requirements

In order to study on this course, we require completion of a Level 6 study in a technical discipline

OR

3 years of experience in building design and/or construction-related areas.

Target audience

If you are working in the design/construction sector and would like to gain not only knowledge of the current BIM ISO 19650 standards, processes, and technologies but also skills including the Autodesk Revit platform and the Autodesk Navisworks Manage, then this course is for you. This course is also for those who can demonstrate the ability to cope with and benefit from Level 7 studies.

We welcome applications from recent graduates, professionals, SME and industries in building design, construction and consultancy. Applications from all candidates will be considered on their merits in light of the nature and scope of the programme and if they have experience.

Fees

Fee for 2023/4 cohort entry:  This course has a standard fee of £2,000.

Fee for 2024/25 cohort entry - This course has a standard fee of £2,200 for home students and £2,700 for overseas students.

Facilities 

The training will take place online as well as in the Aston PC lab, which is situated in the Main Building at Aston University. This allows the use of both software and hardware to help with the understanding of the course.

Cancellation policy

Instructors

You will learn from a multidisciplinary team of instructors with a vast experience in the BIM and construction industry. Our instructors have worked in design and construction using the Autodesk Revit platform and the Autodesk Navisworks Manage.

Dr Kenneth Park has 28+ years construction research and industrial experience internationally and currently Reading in Construction Management and Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Infrastructure & Sustainable Engineering, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

He is a Fellow Member of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS), a Chartered Fellow Member of Chartered Institute of Building, UK (FCIOB), Senior Fellow (SFHEA) Advance HE, Fellow of Association for Project Management (FAPM), PMP (Project Management Professional, PMI, USA), and a CCM (Chartered Construction Manager).  His research and expertise lie in the areas of construction management, whole-life management, sustainable housing refurbishment, smart construction, and process improvement.
