Studied via distance learning, this standalone module offers a comprehensive exploration of the ageing eye, focusing on the latest developments in optometric research and clinical practice. Designed for optometrists and eye care practitioners, it provides an evidence-based approach to managing the unique challenges presented by an ageing population.

The indicative content of the module includes the optometric examination of older patients, the aetiology and management of presbyopia and techniques for restoring near visual function. It also covers the assessment of geriatric low-vision patients, fitting and dispensing for older adults and the optometric management of conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke and visual hallucinations. Additional topics include the identification of ocular signs of physical abuse and visual risk factors for falls in older patients.

This is a level 7 module (equivalent level of study to a postgraduate or masters degree) worth 20 credits.

Objectives and outcomes

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive, research-based understanding of factors related to the ageing eye.
  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the diagnosis and subsequent management of ageing patients in clinical optometric practice.
  • Draw on research evidence to inform clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of technology and techniques used to assess and support the visual function of ageing patients in clinical and research settings.

  • You should be a registered optometrist with the UK General Optical Council (GOC) or another eye care professional.

The United Kingdom government has confirmed that European Union (EU), other European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals commencing academic courses in England from August 2021 will no longer be charged the same tuition rates as UK students.

Tuition fees for students are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) to take account of the University’s increased costs of delivering the Programme. Any such increase shall always be in accordance with the law. When undertaking a placement year, a placement year fee applies.

  • This course is delivered via distance learning. You will access learning materials for general study, revision and assessment via our virtual learning environment, Blackboard. This platform allows you to access a comprehensive range of study materials, scientific journals, e-journals, databases and much more.

  • Assessment
    The assessment for this standalone module comprises two components:

    Multiple choice questions (10%): An open-book, one-hour exam testing your understanding of lecture content.

    Case study (90%): Two case reports with reflections and references, or an essay assignment (title must be approved by the module lead).
