The advanced clinical practice programme is for clinical practitioners in the NHS seeking to meet the requirements of advanced practice within healthcare. Designed by practising advanced clinical practitioners, this programme prepares the future workforce to support the needs of the healthcare system and offers a starting point for those wishing to progress to consultant-level practice in their field.

This course offers you the opportunity to advance your clinical practice through a suite of core and optional modules designed to enhance your ability to undertake roles within advanced practice and develop an advancing workforce of healthcare professionals who can practice at an advanced level autonomously.

Course description

Advanced Clinical Practice MSc

Students studying on this programme will benefit from the flexibility to choose from a range of clinical and non-clinical modules to meet the HEE pillars of advanced clinical practice.

The course is delivered by Aston Pharmacy School, with collaboration from a range of Advanced Clinical Practitioners from a variety of healthcare disciplines. Within the optional modules, students have the opportunity to further their knowledge in the Leadership and Management, Education, and Research pillars to meet their specific role needs.

Our course is open to all registered health care practitioners in England who wish to be recognised as Advanced Health Care Practitioners as well as further afield for those aiming to enhance their own clinical practice.

Postgraduate students are required to balance academic work and research projects. You will be expected to engage with teaching materials, online lectures, and in-person sessions. Students successfully completing the MSc will be able to meet the requirements of any advanced clinical practice role in their discipline. In the growing and changing NHS, there are growing opportunities for autonomously practising health care practitioners to manage advanced clinical care of patients. Our programme equips you to meet the needs of the advanced healthcare roles in all sectors of practice including but not limited to:

  • Emergency Care

  • An established Virtual Learning Environment for teaching and course-organisation materials and communications, such as lecture notes, presentations and videos.
  • New clinical training facilities including a new 'ward' area.
  • Modern lecture theatres and classrooms, equipped with the latest audio-visual equipment and technology.
  • Hard-copy and electronic access to publications, journals and large scientific databases. 
  • A newly refurbished and extended Aston University Library. The Library is open 7 days a week all year round, and at key times of the academic year, it is open 24 hours a day on 6 days a week.

Course objectives

  1.  To provide you with a programme of professionally relevant and educationally challenging postgraduate education that enables you to extend your role of practice and be more autonomous, including using prescribing skills where appropriate. 
  2. To provide you with the knowledge, skills and leadership abilities necessary to be able to integrate positive service developments into your clinical setting
  3. To develop skills that enable you to implement service development and advanced clinical practice through teaching, supervision, leadership, management, and clinical audit; and plan a research project or service improvement project related to your own field of practice. 
  4. To support you in meeting the requirements of enhanced, advanced and consultant level practice within healthcare settings  
  5. To enable you to become an advanced practitioners able to respond to the changing demands of health care practice

Entry requirements

Information needed

We welcome applications from candidates interested in our course who have the skills and capability to excel. All candidates are considered on an individual basis based on their qualifications and experience.

You must be a registered healthcare professional with an appropriate professional accreditation, i.e. pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI), Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or an allied health professional registered with the Health Professionals Council (HCPC)

  • You must have a minimum of 1-2 years post-registration experience within a patient-facing role.
  • Ideally, you should be currently employed in a patient-facing role.
  • Able to access an appropriately qualified/experienced mentor to support training in practice.

The United Kingdom government has confirmed that European Union (EU), other European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals commencing academic courses in England from August 2021 will no longer be charged the same tuition rates as UK students.

Tuition fees for students are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) to take account of the University’s increased costs of delivering the Programme. Any such increase shall always be in accordance with the law. When undertaking a placement year, a placement year fee applies.
