Module overview

Studied via blended learning (online and in-person sessions), this standalone module provides an in-depth exploration of adult audiology, focusing on the assessment and management of hearing-related conditions. Ideal for enhancing your qualifications as an audiologist or advancing your professional development, it enriches your understanding of the critical role audiology plays in improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

The indicative content of the module includes patient-centered approaches to care, assessment tools for hearing loss, and strategies for rehabilitation. Additionally, it covers the evaluation of management plans for complex audiological profiles, and the integration of technology advancements in audiology practice.

This is a level 7 module (equivalent level of study to a postgraduate or masters degree) worth 15 credits.

  • This module is suitable for individuals already working in the field of audiology and would like to expand their skillset. This module has an emphasis on the Adult Assessment and Management pathway, including device options. We also run the Adult Rehabilitation standalone module for an in-depth look at Adult Rehabilitation. This module can be taken to support the British Academy of Audiology’s Higher Training Scheme (HTS). It is taught alongside students on the MSc Clinical Science course, as part of the National School of Healthcare Science’s Scientist Training Programme (STP).

Objectives and outcomes

  1. Enables you to gain a theoretical understanding of assessment and rehabilitation for adult populations in audiology, including those with additional needs.
  2. Enables you to critically appraise and evaluate the evidence base, fostering a culture of self-evaluation and continuous skill development.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Apply integrative understanding of patient-centered care in formulating appropriate patient assessment plans.
  • Appraise adult hearing loss using clinically applicable tools and diagnostic techniques.
  • Evaluate the medical aetiology of hearing-related conditions and the applicability of research in amplification and aural rehabilitation.
  • Appraise the evidence base for holistic management and rehabilitation approaches for adult patients in audiology to develop best practice.

  • You must be a clinician in the field of audiology and have a minimum of a BSc degree.

The United Kingdom government has confirmed that European Union (EU), other European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals commencing academic courses in England from August 2021 will no longer be charged the same tuition rates as UK students.

Tuition fees for students are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) to take account of the University’s increased costs of delivering the Programme. Any such increase shall always be in accordance with the law. When undertaking a placement year, a placement year fee applies.

Delivery and assessment

  • This course is delivered via blended learning. You will access learning materials for general study, revision and assessment via our virtual learning environment, Blackboard. This platform allows you to access a comprehensive range of study materials, scientific journals, e-journals, databases and much more.
  • Seminars will be based on the pre-reading and materials available online. Students will also be taught by external guest clinicians and industry experts.
  • Seminars take place both online and in-person during October and January (3 days respectively).
  • Assessment

    For this module, you will complete two coursework components, both designed to evaluate your understanding of the module's learning outcomes:

    Individual assignment (70%)

    Journal club (30%)
