All employees at Aston are required to complete mandatory training courses when they start work with us. These are:

  • Fire Safety 
  • Health and Safety Awareness 
  • Prevent
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Cyber Security Awareness
  • Data Protection Law Training
  • Safeguarding
     

What you need to do:

You need to login to our virtual learning environment, iLearn, and complete these courses and pass the tests. Below you will find more information on the courses.

Fire Safety:

All of us at Aston have a responsibility to ensure we behave safely and are vigilant for potent fire safety risks in the workplace. This training provides practical advice on how to promote safety in the workplace and manage risks.

Time to complete: Approx. 30 minutes
Refresher period: 2 years 

Health and Safety Awareness:

This mandatory course is designed to raise awareness and assist you in performing your role, safely.  It will also help you contribute positively to the institution’s health and safety culture – one that underpins Aston’s aim of having  an international reputation for delivery of outstanding graduate outcomes and equipping business and communities with the skills for future success.

Key areas of focus are:

  • How to play your part and make Aston a safe and healthy University? 
  • Where to find safety information, advice and support? 
  • What to do in an emergency?

Time to complete: Approx. 30 minutes
Refresher period: 2 years

Prevent:

‘Prevent’ is part of the UK Government’s counter terrorism strategy and aims to prevent people from supporting or becoming involved in terrorism. This e-learning is designed to raise awareness of what Prevent is and how all staff have a role in the welfare of students.

Time to complete: Approx. 30 minutes
Refresher period: 2 years

Equality and Diversity:

Equality and Diversity applies to all staff and students at the university – it is not just our legal responsibilities but also the duty we have to each other to make Aston a welcoming place to work and study for everyone. This e-learning course covers the legal basis for Equality and the protections we all have, but also the case for why this matters, what Aston does to promote equality and what you can do.

Time to complete: Approx. 30 minutes
Refresher period: 2 years

Cyber Security Awareness:

This training covers the essentials of cyber security at the University – keeping information and our students and colleagues safe. In this course you will learn how to protect information and the University’s legal responsibilities, how to keep physical data secure and the University’s policies, how to work safely when away from campus and how to keep data safe in the cloud, and how to identify common cyber security threats such as phishing, social engineering and malware. The e-learning also covers content specific for colleagues engaging in research.

Time to complete: Approx. 45 minutes
Refresher period: 2 years

Data Protection Law Training:

This module provides an update on the UK’s data protection law framework, with an emphasis on how the data protection laws are implemented at the University through its policies, procedures and privacy notices.  The module also includes a refresher on personal data breaches, including how to spot them, what action to take and common pitfalls to avoid. 

Time to complete: Approx. 60 minutes
Refresher period: 2 years

Safeguarding

This training provides an introduction to the concepts of safeguarding. As well as our duty of care to the students and their families, we also have a duty of care to each other. The issues raised in this training can affect all employees at some time, not just people who are recognised as 'vulnerable' .

Time to complete: Approx. 60 minutes 
Refresher period: 12 months
