College of Health and Life Sciences Research

Our research outcomes deliver on our strategic aim to ‘improve well-being across the lifespan and contribute to public policy and economic prosperity’ through our collective focus on translation and impact.

We specialise in four key multidisciplinary themes of cellular and molecular biomedicine, health and disease across the lifespan, clinical and systems neuroscience, and vision, cognition, and language.

We are home to one of Aston’s four research institutes, three centres of excellence, and seven research groups. Our research groups link directly with our five schools of study; the School of Biosciences, Aston Medical School, School of Optometry, Aston Pharmacy School, and School of Psychology, ensuring our research is fed directly into teaching, providing our students with access to the latest findings, trends, and thinking in the field.

Our work has been internationally recognised:

  • 94% of our Allied Health Professions research being rated as world leading or internationally excellent (3*/4*) by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF)
  • We are 12th in the world for citations in Psychology (Times Higher Education, World Subject Rankings, 2021)
  • Top 10 in the UK for research quality in Aural and Oral Sciences, Biological Sciences, Ophthalmics, Pharmacology and Pharmacy, and Psychology (Complete University Guide, 2021)
