Guaranteed internships with every Master's degree

Stand out from the crowd by choosing a postgraduate degree at Aston.

Aston’s Postgraduate Guaranteed Internship Scheme means you get more than a degree; you will graduate with an industry internship and the experience and skills employers around the world are looking for. We have a network of global employers with exciting opportunities available for Aston students starting in September 2025 and beyond.

How does it work?

We guarantee an internship to all full-time students studying a taught master’s programme at either our Birmingham or London campus, including MA and MSc programmes, for students joining Aston in the 25/26 or 26/27 academic year.

It is open to both international and UK students, and there is no charge to register or participate in the scheme.

Our multi award-winning Careers and Placements Team will work with you to secure your industry internship which you will complete part-time, taking no more than 20 hours per week. The precise hours and timing will depend on each employer’s requirement, but will fit around your study timetable.

The duration of the internship will usually be around two months, but could range from around one month up to six months. The internship will not normally exceed the length of your course.

We have a range of in-person, hybrid and remote internships on offer.

Types of internship

Students are guaranteed to receive one of the following types of internship:

1. In-person/hybrid internship with an external employer

We have a network of employers who offer in-person or hybrid in-person/remote internships. These are typically unpaid, however some employers do provide either a salary or expenses, this is determined by the employer and will usually be stated when the internship opportunity is shared with students.

2. In-person/hybrid internship at Aston University

We have a range of professional internships across the university, offering in-person or hybrid in-person/remote opportunities. These internships will usually be paid. The rate of pay will be stated when the opportunity is shared with students.

3. Remote (online) internship with an external employer

In partnership with a leading global company, we are offering a range of remote internships with employers across the world. These offer industry experience working on live projects and tasks, all from the comfort of your home. Previous internship participants valued learning how to build connections and relationships remotely, as many careers now involve remote working.

These three internship types are covered by these full terms and conditions of the Postgraduate Guaranteed Internship Scheme.

4. Mandatory clinical internship

Some of our courses include a mandatory clinical internship; affected courses will include this in your offer letter. For applicable courses, your course team will secure your internship and this will be an integrated part of your studies.

What if I don’t want to do an industry placement?

No worries, taking part in the programme is entirely optional (with the exception of students studying a course with a mandatory clinical placement). There are a wide range of other career-boosting activities, including the Aston Global Advantage and careers support from our multi-award winning Careers and Placements Team, which is available both during your study and for three years after you graduate.

This sounds too good to be true – what’s the catch?

There’s no catch, but there are a few things you will need to do once you have enrolled on your course.

Students must register for the scheme in the stated time frame, the timing and registration process will be communicated to you once you have enrolled on your course (you can’t register before you have fully enrolled). This is not an application which you pass or fail, it is just to register your interest in participating. There is no cost to register or participate in the scheme (though you may incur some travel costs for in-person internships).

You will need to actively engage with the opportunities communicated and will need to follow the employer/organisation’s application process. You can apply for any of the first three types of internship (excluding students on courses with a mandatory clinical placement) but we cannot guarantee which type you will secure.

Read our full terms and conditions.

International students – will this affect my rights to work in the UK?

International students will typically be able to work for up to 20 hours per week during term-time. Whether your internship is paid or unpaid, it will be classed as work and therefore is included within your allocated allowance (with the exception of students completing a mandatory clinical placement). So for example, if your internship is 12 hours per week, you would only be permitted to do a further 8 hours of work per week, during the period your internship is taking place.

Make sure you check your visa carefully to understand what your working entitlement is. If you are unsure we would suggest you ask our International Student Advice team by emailing astoninternational@aston.ac.uk before commencing additional work. This is to ensure you do not inadvertently go over the 20 hour limit.

Who’s it for?

The guaranteed internship scheme is open to all MA and MSc students taught in person at our Birmingham or London campus, who are beginning their programme in September 2025, January 2026, April 2026, May 2026, September 2026, January 2027, April 2027 or May 2027. It is not dependent on prior experience.

Aston MBA students have the opportunity to gain real industry experience throughout the programme, including providing consultancy services to live clients and businesses. Aston’s Postgraduate Guaranteed Internship Scheme helps improve employability by giving students practical work experience, enhancing their CVs, and developing professional skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. It also provides opportunities to network with employers, gain industry insights, and potentially secure future job offers.

How do students secure an internship?

Our Careers and Placements Team supports students by sourcing and quality-checking internship opportunities and sharing them with eligible students. They also guide students through the application process, including CV writing, interviews, and other selection activities.

How many hours a week are the internships?

The exact number of hours per week may vary depending on the specific internship opportunity, but it will not exceed 20 hours during term time, in line with UK visa regulations for international students. This applies to both paid and unpaid internships.

How long does the internship last?

The duration of the internship will usually be around two months, but could range from around one month up to six months. The internship will not normally exceed the course duration. The length may vary depending on the type of internship and the employer offering it.

Will the internship be during term time or over the summer?

Internships will usually be completed during term time.

Will students have a university contact or supervisor during the internship?

Internships are usually carried out during term time, so students will be able to access support from university staff.

Are internships related to a student's field of study?

Wherever possible, students will be provided with an internship that matches their chosen area of study or career ambitions. However, this cannot be guaranteed.

Will the internship be in-person, hybrid, or remote?

The internships offered through the Postgraduate Guaranteed Internship Scheme can be:

  • In-person (with an employer or at Aston University),
  • Remote (online, via a third-party provider),
  • Or hybrid (a mix of in-person and remote work, depending on the employer or line manager).
Are the internships paid or unpaid?

Internships offered through the Postgraduate Guaranteed Internship Scheme can be paid or unpaid, depending on the type:

  • In-person internships with employers: May be paid, unpaid, or offer travel cost reimbursement - this is at the employer’s discretion.
  • In-person internships at Aston University: Are usually paid, though the exact rate is to be confirmed.
  • Remote internships via our third-party provider: Are not paid.
  • Integrated placements (part of some degree programmes): Are not paid.
Which companies offer internships?

In the past, Aston students have completed internships at large multinationals such as GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), IBM, Microsoft, Samsung, Network Rail, Aldi, The Prince’s Trust, and Rolls-Royce, as well as SMEs (small-to-medium-sized enterprises). For further testimonials visit our website.

For the internships which are unpaid, what costs will students need to cover?

For unpaid internships under the Postgraduate Guaranteed Internship Scheme, students may need to cover travel expenses, unless the employer offers reimbursement (some may cover travel costs, but this is not guaranteed).

Are the internships based in Birmingham / London or could they be elsewhere in the UK or overseas?

While some internships will be local to Aston’s campuses, others - especially remote ones - could be based elsewhere in the UK or even overseas, depending on the employer.

Will students receive visa advice and support if they secure an internship overseas?

Although remote internships may be offered by overseas employers, we do not anticipate that the scheme will involve in-person internships overseas. The University can only provide assistance on UK immigration law so any advice for overseas visas will need to be done from an independent legal advisor. However, if an overseas in-person internship is secured we can direct students to sources of visa information.

Can the internship be extended or lead to a job offer?

Job offers are not guaranteed but employers may choose to extend internships or offer further opportunities based on performance.

Read our terms and conditions.
Do visa work-hour restrictions apply during the placement?
