Library Building

Collaborative study spaces can be found on the ground floor and bookable group study rooms. These spaces are for group conversation and are mobile phone friendly.

Quiet study spaces can be found on the first and second floors. These spaces are for whispered conversation and mobile phones on vibrate

Silent study spaces can be found on the third floor.  These spaces are for individual study with no conversation and mobile phones on silent. 

Main building exterior

Main Building

Social study space on the upper ground floor offers a range of spaces for individual and group work including access to screens and a kitchen area including a microwave and facilities to make hot drinks. This space is mobile phone friendly.

Quiet study space on the seventh floor offers spaces for individuals and small groups for whispered conversations and phones on vibrate. You will also find a kitchen area including facilities to make hot drinks and lockers for temporary storage.

 

I'm looking for somewhere quiet, where can I go?

Library building

The third floor of the Library is a dedicated silent space.

The Library is usually quieter in the mornings before 11:00 and after 19:00 in the evenings.

Main building

There is quiet study space on the seventh floor.

Are there any study spaces open after midnight?

The Social Study Space in the Main Building is open 24/7 via the out of hours entrance.

Are there any dedicated Postgraduate spaces?

Library building

There is a dedicated postgraduate room on third floor of the Library.

Main building

There are bookable postgraduate research rooms in the seventh floor quiet study space:

  • MB717A capacity 2
  • MB717B capacity 2
  • MB717D capacity 2

These can booked using the panels outside the rooms.

Where can I book a room to work as a group?

There are 10 bookable rooms across the Library building and Main Building.

Equipment

Computers 

Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis on the ground, second and third floors of the Library.

Software available across the University can be accessed via the AstonApps portal. 

Remember to save your work regularly either to your home drive or in your OneDrive space via the Microsoft 365 Portal.
 

Laptops 

Loanable laptops are available to borrow for 4 hours from the laptop cabinets on the ground and second floors of the library.  They can be borrowed by students and staff using your Aston University uniCARD.

Laptops are issued for 4 hours without a power cable or mouse (battery life is approximately 4 hours). 

You will need your uniCARD to return your laptop.

Personal devices

You are welcome to bring your own devices and chargers to support your studies, sockets are available in all study spaces. We recommend staying with your device to keep it safe.

Printers

You can use the printers to print and photocopy on A4 or A3. You can also scan to email.  Tap your uniCARD on the printers to access your account, the first time you do this you will be prompted to login using your Aston username and password.

How can I print from my own device?

If you are printing from your own laptop, tablet or phone, when you are on campus you can upload your documents to your print queue using myuniprint.aston.ac.uk.

  • Choose the web print option on the left hand side menu to upload your document
  • Go to a printer to print your document using your uniCard 

You will need to be connected to the Aston Connect Wi-Fi network for this to work. 

How much print credit do I have?

All students are given £50 credit per year. If you run out of credit, contact the Digital Services Helpdesk where they can advise on how to obtain additional credit. Further details can be found on Solve.

DVD Player

You can borrow a DVD player from the library reception for use in group study rooms or with your own device for four hours. 

Our DVD collection can be found in the Library on the second floor row 1.
