Professor Richard Tunney, an expert in gambling addiction and head of psychology at Aston University, has been appointed as co-chair of research for the Academic Forum for the Study of Gambling.

Professor Tunney is an experimental cognitive psychologist by background. His research is on focused on judgement, decision-making and behavioural addiction, including gambling.

The Academic Forum for the Study of Gambling is an independent group of academics dedicated to advancing the research needed to effectively prevent, reduce, and address gambling harm. 

The Forum supports a range of outcomes including: a coordinated voice of independent researchers in the UK to advance the research needed to effectively prevent, reduce, and address gambling harms, increased research opportunities and understanding of potential funding models to support independent research, enhanced mechanisms for evidence-informed policy and practice through communication and dissemination strategies, and stronger research capacity and skills development.

Speaking of his appointment, professor Tunney said: "I am proud to be associated with the foundation of this new learned society. The Academic Forum exists to study gambling and gambling behaviour independently of industry funding, and to provide an impartial source of scientific knowledge of the impact that gambling can have on the individual and society."

To accomplish its aims, the Forum engages in a number of activities including responding to or initiating calls for evidence, providing seed grants for promising research, supporting independent gambling conferences, public engagement and providing opportunities for students.
