Aston University has announced its Green Advantage programme will return in January 2025. Applications are open for the 12-week sustainability course, designed for business leaders, managers and professionals, which now features new workshops, expanded peer-learning opportunities and increased one-to-one business support.

Green Advantage equips participants with the knowledge and tools to address climate and environmental challenges, all while boosting business performance and increasing profitability.

The course, led by industry experts and Aston University academics, provides comprehensive coverage of essential environmental sustainability topics relevant to today’s business landscape. Participants will gain valuable real-world insights, learning how businesses are effectively addressing sustainability challenges and adopting practical strategies that can be applied to their own organisations. Additionally, attendees will develop a bespoke sustainability roadmap, tailored to help them achieve their specific sustainability goals.

Green Advantage has already delivered several highly successful cohorts since October 2022, with participating companies including Mars UK, Handelsbanken, National Grid, Shrewsbury Town Council, Mills & Reeve and Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, alongside many successful small businesses from across the West Midlands. From digital agencies and violinists to corporate manufacturers, businesses across many industries have already participated, proving that sustainability is a growing priority for all sectors.

The programme includes a welcome session, seven workshops, seven focus sessions, and up to eight hours of one-to-one coaching, all designed to fit around full-time work.

Paula Whitehouse, director of Aston Centre for Growth, said:

“Many businesses face significant challenges in implementing sustainable practices. Green Advantage is tailored to help leaders overcome these hurdles by providing practical solutions, expert guidance, and opportunities for peer learning.

“Our mission is to empower business leaders to align meaningful action with their organisational strategy, driving both business performance and a greener, more sustainable future.”

Applicants must be British nationals or UK residents (minimum three years), aged 19+, residing or working in The Black Country, Greater Birmingham and Solihull or Coventry, and have responsibilities linked to sustainability. They must also not be enrolled in another government-funded programme.

About Aston University

For over a century, Aston University’s enduring purpose has been to make our world a better place through education, research and innovation, by enabling our students to succeed in work and life, and by supporting our communities to thrive economically, socially and culturally.

Aston University’s history has been intertwined with the history of Birmingham, a remarkable city that once was the heartland of the Industrial Revolution and the manufacturing powerhouse of the world.

Born out of the First Industrial Revolution, Aston University has a proud and distinct heritage dating back to our formation as the School of Metallurgy in 1875, the first UK College of Technology in 1951, gaining university status by Royal Charter in 1966, and becoming The Guardian University of the Year in 2020.

Building on our outstanding past, we are now defining our place and role in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (and beyond) within a rapidly changing world.
