- The new PhD+ scheme includes an integrated four-month industrial placement
- It also includes training in the latest advancements in AI, leadership and business
- The scholarships are fully funded for three and a half years and are open to all regardless of nationality.
Aston University is launching a pioneering fully funded doctoral scholarship scheme designed to equip researchers with the skills that are crucial for success in the digital age and to meet the demands of the new industrial revolution powered by technology.
Building on the University’s close working relationship with industry PhD+ is the first UK programme to combine an industrial placement, continuing professional development (CPD) accreditation and provide training in advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) leadership and business as standard.
The innovative programme pairs individual research students with an industry partner who will contribute both financially and in-kind to the research project. This approach will elevate students’ learning and prepare them for both work and life within a changing world.
Research at Aston University is driven by three interdisciplinary themes of health, digital innovation and technology to create a lasting, positive impact across society, culture, health and the environment.
Projects on the PhD+ programme include developing automated deployment of competitive autonomous vehicles for aircraft service delivery with industry partner Aurrigo, an automated aviation technology company.
Other industrial partners include Domestic & General (D&G), Mondelez and leading European packaging company Coveris, as well the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The PhD+ programme is open to both home and international students and covers all University tuition fees regardless of nationality plus a stipend for three and a half years at UK Research Council rates. Applications are now open and the first cohort of Aston PhD+ scholars is set to begin their studies in September 2025.
Professor Aleks Subic, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Aston University, said:
“We believe that successful universities of the future will foster confident and enterprising learners who are able to adapt to the changing world of work and drive research and innovation.
“Aston University’s pioneering new PhD+ scholarship scheme is part of our 2030 strategic ambition to ensure that our graduates are ready to tackle real challenges facing industries and society, combined with the opportunity to engage with businesses and clinical organisations, to enhance our graduates’ employability through industry relevance and practice.”
Professor David Keene, chief executive officer at Aurrigo, said:
“Our partnership with Aston University on the PhD+ scholarship scheme is a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of autonomous vehicle technology in the aviation sector.
“By automating aircraft service delivery, we’re aiming to increase efficiency and reduce turnaround times at airports. Collaborating with Aston University’s talented PhD students allows us to integrate cutting-edge research into real-world applications, strengthening our commitment to innovation in autonomous solutions.”
Mr Matthew Revell, Medical Director at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“Partnering with Aston University through the PhD+ scholarship scheme allows us to explore innovative AI-driven solutions that can significantly improve patient care.
“By developing a 3D screening tool for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine) based on digital imaging, we aim to advance early detection methods, enhancing outcomes for young patients. We’re thrilled to support Aston University’s commitment to impactful, real-world research that aligns closely with our mission to lead in orthopaedic innovation and patient-centred care."
- Notes to editors
For over a century, Aston University’s enduring purpose has been to make our world a better place through education, research and innovation, by enabling our students to succeed in work and life, and by supporting our communities to thrive economically, socially and culturally.
Aston University’s history has been intertwined with the history of Birmingham, a remarkable city that once was the heartland of the Industrial Revolution and the manufacturing powerhouse of the world.
Born out of the First Industrial Revolution, Aston University has a proud and distinct heritage dating back to our formation as the School of Metallurgy in 1875, the first UK College of Technology in 1951, gaining university status by Royal Charter in 1966, and becoming The Guardian University of the Year in 2020.
Building on our outstanding past, we are now defining our place and role in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (and beyond) within a rapidly changing world.
