A recent graduate from Aston University is about to embark on new research into the fiction produced as a result of the Covid pandemic.

This year saw the first group of MA English students graduate from the University.

Shannon Franklin from West Bromwich was awarded a distinction and was presented with her qualification at Aston University’s first ever winter graduation which took place in the city centre on Monday 20 January.

The 24-year-old who also holds an undergraduate degree from the University decided to take the masters course because of her fascination in new and upcoming research in English.

Her passion for the subject has now led her to win a prestigious PhD scholarship in the emerging field of Covid fiction, the novels and stories depicting the experience of living through the pandemic and lockdowns.

Shannon said: “Not only has MA English allowed me to explore the fascinations of the English language on a new level, but it has also allowed me to progress as a researcher.

“A big part of this course has been exploring how literature ties into areas like health and wellbeing—looking at how stories can reflect mental health, trauma and the human experience, as well as how they can promote empathy and resilience - which is aiding my current research incredibly.”

“Opportunities that have become available to me since studying at Aston University have been incredible, it’s a perfect university for anyone wanting to learn and develop not only academically but also on a personal level.”
Dr Marcello Giovanelli head of the department of Communication and Culture, and Shannon’s main supervisor said: “We are extremely excited about Shannon’s new study into Covid fiction, it is a project that will provide important insights into the cultural legacy of the pandemic and help us to understand ‘Covid fiction’ within the context of health humanities.

“I am especially delighted that Shannon will be joining the department and working within Aston Stylistics Research Group. She showed dedication through her masters studies, a quality that will be indispensable as she develops her research career.”

Approximately 4,500 graduates and guests attended the January ceremony which was held at Symphony Hall in Birmingham city centre. Not only does 2025 mark the University’s first winter graduation it also marks 130 years since the foundation of Birmingham Municipal Technical School, the educational establishment which eventually evolved into Aston University.

Building on our outstanding past, we are now defining our place and role in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (and beyond) within a rapidly changing world.
