Dr Anitha Chinnaswamy, senior lecturer in Cyber Security Management at Aston Business School and deputy director of the Cyber Security Innovation Centre, has won in her category at the prestigious Midlands Women in Tech Awards 2024.

The Midlands Women in Tech Awards are dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of women working within the tech industry, challenging perceptions and spotlighting the pioneering women shaping the tech sector.

Dr Chinnaswamy took home the Academic of the Year accolade. It reflects her profound contributions to the cyber security field and her commitment to diversity, inclusion and the empowerment of women in technology.

At Aston Business School, she has spearheaded the design and deployment of the novel MSc Cyber Security Management programme, a cutting-edge course that prepares future leaders to navigate the evolving landscape of cyber security. She has led research and consultancy projects in collaboration with key stakeholders in the public and private sectors, all geared towards strengthening the UK's cyber resilience.

Dr Chinnaswamy said:

“I am truly humbled to have received the 'Academic Award'. Having been an academic for most of my professional life there is no greater joy than being acknowledged for work that I am so passionate about.

“This recognition provides me with a platform to continue to inspire and encourage more young women and girls to explore careers in tech and to discover all the opportunities it holds.

“With women making up less than a quarter of the tech workforce, even though we represent half of the population and workforce, I strongly believe it is our collective responsibility to break barriers and promote diversity.”

Professor Marian Garcia, dean of Aston Business School, said:

“I am delighted to see this recognition for Dr Chinnaswamy.

“Her career exemplifies excellence, innovation and leadership in cyber security. As an academic, researcher and consultant, she has successfully led numerous projects aimed at advancing cyber security awareness, risk management and organisational training.

“Her work has been pivotal in addressing the increasing complexity of cyber threats, while also making the field more accessible and inclusive.”

About Aston University

For over a century, Aston University’s enduring purpose has been to make our world a better place through education, research and innovation, by enabling our students to succeed in work and life, and by supporting our communities to thrive economically, socially and culturally.

Aston University’s history has been intertwined with the history of Birmingham, a remarkable city that once was the heartland of the Industrial Revolution and the manufacturing powerhouse of the world.

Born out of the First Industrial Revolution, Aston University has a proud and distinct heritage dating back to our formation as the School of Metallurgy in 1875, the first UK College of Technology in 1951, gaining university status by Royal Charter in 1966, and becoming The Guardian University of the Year in 2020.

Building on our outstanding past, we are now defining our place and role in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (and beyond) within a rapidly changing world.
