Aston University has hosted a talk by alumnus Steve McMillan, who since graduating in 1993 has gone on to head up Teradata, a data and analytics enterprise software company which achieved total revenues of approximately USD$2 billion in 2021.

In How to build the business of the future, he talked about the transformation of Teradata, from an on-premise technology company to a modern cloud company.

Steve McMillan became CEO and was elected to the board of Teradata in June 2020 and has more than two decades of technology experience, with a track record of transforming enterprise services and product businesses into industry-leading cloud portfolio offerings.

He explained how dynamic shifts in requirements of customers, supply chains, businesses and industries all over the world can be met and delivered by using the power of data within organisations.

The talk, which was held on Monday 14 March, was an opportunity for the audience to ask Steve questions – ranging from career advice to how to run a multi-billion dollar corporation.

Dr Shun Ha Sylvia Wong, associate dean international and programme director for MSc in computer science said:
“This was an inspirational guest lecture by a distinguished Aston alumnus.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for Aston University students to gain more insight into how to build a business of the future and learn from our speaker's rich experience in leading successful IT / Tech businesses.”

Prior to joining Teradata Mr McMillan was the executive vice president of global services for F5 Networks. There he was responsible for more than half of worldwide operations and achieved significant top-line growth and industry-leading customer satisfaction.

Previously he worked at Oracle and IBM where he held increasingly senior leadership positions, driving operations and execution with a consistent record of exceeding revenue and profit targets, business transformation, and collaborative leadership.

In 1993 Steve graduated from Aston University with a first class degree in Management and Computer Science.
In addition to his corporate success he is a published author on technology and management papers and developed a patent around cloud computing.
