Aston University has been ranked joint 17th in the 2021 People & Planet University League, which ranks 154 UK universities against sustainability and ethics criteria, placing the University in the League’s 1st Class category.

The 2021 ranking provides the first opportunity to analyse how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the sector’s sustainability performance.

People & Planet’s University League is the only comprehensive and independent league table of UK universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance. It is compiled annually by the UK’s largest student campaigning network, People & Planet.

Adrian Owen, deputy director of estates at Aston University, said:

“Our sustainability team aims to keep our campus one of the greenest and most sustainable in the country and have a range of projects to achieve this, including the ISO 14001, ISO 5001 and Eco-campus Platinum environmental and energy management systems.

“We’re also committed to meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which include social and ethical commitments beyond the environment alone. Here’s how we’re working towards some of the top objectives.”

Jack Ruane, University League Manager at People & Planet, said:

“In the age of the climate crisis, transparency and accountability on sustainability must not be seen as a burden, but as a necessity. We will continue to encourage the sector to submit estates management (EMR) data to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and call on the Office for Students (OFS) to work with the sector to provide regulatory leadership by mandating its reporting once again.”
