Course outline and modules
Our Medical Biosciences BSc, delivered as a partnership with Aston University and EAIM, Singapore, will equip you with the training, professional skills and technical knowledge required for a rewarding career in biomedical science or research in the allied health professions.
Throughout this course, you will study a range of subjects that are essential to understanding human health and disease. You’ll discover more about the role biomedical scientists play in healthcare settings, and how their motivation, knowledge and innovative thinking is utilised.
You will develop your knowledge, skills and understanding, as well as gaining invaluable real-world insight, through your own research project, giving you the platform for a career that saves and transforms lives.
This qualification offers you the flexibility to begin your studies in October, January, April and July each year and, on successful completion, you will graduate with an honours degree awarded by Aston University.
Course outline
Delivered over eight blocks of study, learning on this course has been designed to provide you with the ability to combine study and working life.
Each module is worth 30 credits and is delivered over a 3 month block period, which means that the course can be completed in 24 months.
Stage 1
All students joining the course will receive approved prior learning/recognised prior learning credit for stage 1 based on previous qualifications and experience, allowing direct entry into stage 2.
Stage 2
Blocks:
- To provide in depth information about the physiological processes that regulate homeostasis by which the human body maintains a relatively constant internal environment and the hormonal signalling pathways underpinning this.
- To provide students with a framework for understanding clinical genetics and experience in applying it to human disease.
- To offer students an opportunity to explore disease mechanisms with lecturers selected for their research expertise.
- To provide training in transferrable and research skills that are relevant to Biomedical Scientists and that will enhance their employability.

Mechanisms of Pathology
- To give students a broad overview of the factors that cause pathology in disease.
- To teach students the principles underlying pathology of a variety of diseases, providing specific examples.
- To teach students how the immune system responds to infection or damage, in terms of beneficial and detrimental effects.
- To provide students with understanding of the variety of pathogens that cause disease, and the mechanisms.

Cell Signalling and Physiology
- To provide in depth information about the physiological processes that regulate homeostasis by which the human body maintains a relatively constant internal environment and the hormonal signalling pathways underpinning this.

Clinical Genetics and Human Disease
- To provide students with a framework for understanding clinical genetics and experience in applying it to human disease.

- Clinical Sciences
The prevention, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease is heavily dependent upon the results generated in diagnostic pathology laboratories. This module contains core material which directly reflects the competency required to practice as Biomedical Scientist. It aims to provide an overview of the three main pathology disciplines; Haematology & Transfusion Science, Clinical Biochemistry and Cellular Pathology. In doing this, the module will provide an overview haematological systems, biochemical processes and cells and tissues in health, as well as discuss the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of haematological, biochemical and pathological disorders.
Stage F (Final)

Cancer Biology
- To provide an enhanced understanding of the biology of cancer including its nomenclature, causes, metastasis and the basis for conventional and novel therapies and development of resistance.
Research Project Preparation
- To provide an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a biosciences-related area.
- To gain experience of practical techniques relevant to biosciences.
- To prepare students to undertake an individual research project.

Professional Development for Biomedical Scientists
- To provide students with the opportunity to develop a range of research and translational skills that will equip them to undertake scientific careers and demonstrate professional behaviour.

Clinical and Food Microbiology
- To provide an overview of microbiology and infectious disease within clinical and food and hygiene settings.
- To understand the role of a Biomedical Scientist in the isolation of pathogens.
- To increase awareness of antimicrobial resistances (AMR) within a range of communities through public engagement.
Immunology and Inflammation
- The aim of this module is to provide advanced theoretical knowledge of the role of the immune system in health and disease.

Research Project
- To enable students to generate, select, analyse, interpret and present scientific data.
- To allow students to undertake an independent scientific project.

Entry requirements
Typical offers:
- Diploma: Diploma in Biomedical Science or related Life Sciences from the Polytechnics in Singapore with a minimum 2.0 GPA
- Proficiency in English Language: Minimum EASB/ETEDP Level 3/ IELTS 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component
- GCSE in English Language or English Literature at level C or above.
Entry will be at the start of stage 2, and will be via recognised prior learning of an approved programme of study at Diploma level.
Students will normally be in employment in a relevant setting.
This Programme is designed for students who primarily study and work in Singapore and the surrounding areas.
Learning, teaching and assessment
Learning materials are provided through Aston’s virtual learning environment, giving you access to a comprehensive range of study materials, up-to-date key texts, scientific journals, e-journals, databases and more.
Your learning will be supported by tutorials delivered by EAIM, where a new blended teaching method makes use of innovative learning methods such as:
- smart interactive boards
- gamification
- short videos
- bite-sized information under each learning outcome
We use a range of assessment methods, although the typical methods are coursework and an end of Block delivery. Exams generally take the form of an unseen essay, short answer and multiple-choice questions, and in silico practicals.
Academic content is provided by Aston University academics, and you will also be supported by tutors at EAIM. The course director on behalf of Aston University is Dr Stephane Gross, Lecturer in Cellular Biology.
