Aston Law School - more than just a Law School

A welcome from the Dean of School, Jonathan Fortnam

jonathanOur ambition for undergraduates is that they should be future-ready when they graduate. We bring together strong academic depth from our research and teaching team with practical insights from our teachers who have practised as lawyers, so our students learn about the law of business, the business of law and the future of law.

Our LLB degree programme focuses on the foundational legal subjects and the skills needed for a career – whether in law or business or something else. We don’t leave the teaching of skills to chance: we actively teach what employers are looking for alongside our team of Visiting Professional Fellows who bring real-world experiences into the teaching of each module.

Our programme profile contains some innovative modules such as Legal Project Management and Law in an Applied Context, which bring together learning about the business of law as well as the opportunity to experience what you learn. Each Aston Law Student is also guaranteed a virtual internship with top international law firm, Pinsent Masons.

Our postgraduate programme builds on undergraduate study, whether in law or something else, and brings together students from across the globe to study international commercial law. Our LLM programme also gives students the opportunity to engage with our international community and to develop career-boosting skills via the post graduate Aston Global Advantage (personal development programme) module that is run by the award-winning Business School. Indeed, as an Aston LLM student you will have access to certain Business School modules as you build a pathway of postgraduate studies that takes you where you want to be.

Our research is top quality and looks not only to the law as it is, but as it might be in the future. Our research into property in its widest sense is changing the law internationally: researchers from Aston advise governments and the international law community, while our work in ‘New Commerce’ explores the role and development of law in critically important areas such as FinTech, Techlaw, Internet law, International Business and Digital Justice. These are areas that already affect the legal profession, and our research informs and impacts the ways in which they are regulated.

Aston Law School offers more than degree programmes – we always have. We are a gold-standard community of lawyer learners, where our size is deliberately designed so that each student is a name not a number. We are committed to great outcomes and look forward to welcoming you into our team.
