Why Aston University and Optometry?

Aston University is well known and has a great reputation worldwide, as it provides award-winning teaching, great student experience and career prospects. The teaching staff are really supportive and helpful and you are part of a safe and friendly, campus community. Apart from the university, Birmingham is a great city and there is always something to do!

While I was growing up, I frequently visited the Optometrist as I needed vision correction since the age of 10. This made me realise how essential the eyes are, in everyday life as I was unable to do daily activities without my glasses. This inspired me to choose Optometry as I wanted to help improve an individual's quality of life, as being able to see and experience the world around you, is a gift of sight!

What did you enjoy most about the course?

What I enjoyed most about my course, was when we started seeing real patients in clinics. I was able to put all that I had learned and my knowledge into practice, and it was rewarding to improve an individual's vision.

In addition, interacting with patients enhances your skills and experiences, as you are able to further develop your communication and clinical skills.

Placement experience

The fourth year of the Master of Optometry course involved doing a Pre-registration placement under supervision, whilst studying independently for my Masters's year, as these lectures for the classes, were delivered online.

During the placement, you are working full-time as a student Optometrist under supervision. In the evening it is essential to revise for the Master of Optometry courses in addition to your upcoming assessments. Good organisation from the beginning is important, as this will ensure you are successful during the fourth year.

What would you say to any student thinking of studying your course at Aston University?

I am originally from Canada, therefore my advice would be from an international perspective. For anyone considering studying the Master of Optometry course at Aston University, I would advise you to definitely go for it, but be prepared to face a challenge as hard work and dedication are required!  The challenges that you overcome make Optometry a rewarding profession, as you can make life-changing differences, for your patients.

I would suggest visiting the University during open days if possible, to get a feel of the campus and speak to current students about their experience of university life and the course you have decided to enrol on.

If you could give one piece of career advice to your fellow Aston University alumni, what would it be?

My advice to current or prospective students would be to study hard and enjoy the university experience, grasping the opportunities that are provided to them. Get involved in extracurricular activities and make the most of the clinical practice sessions as this will help you develop your basic skills.

Finally, make sure to build good relationships with staff and students as networking is essential, especially in a career like Optometry.
