Why Aston University and Psychology?

I chose to study at Aston University because of the positive comments from graduates about its programmes and student support. However, it was at the open day that I made my final decision. Aston's staff made me feel very welcome and valued, providing a warm and friendly atmosphere. This was in sharp contrast to my previous university open day experiences, in which I did not feel acknowledged or supported.

I opted to study Psychology at Aston University because the staff's enthusiasm for the topic was extremely encouraging. Their passion throughout the open day lectures and conversations piqued my interest, and I was eager to learn more. This true passion to their work convinced me that Aston was the ideal university to further my studies.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

I enjoyed the hands-on experience at Aston University. For example, we had the opportunity to use some brain scanning equipment on one another, which was both instructive and entertaining. I also valued the diverse curriculum, which allowed us to examine several aspects of psychology rather than focusing just on one. Furthermore, having the option of selecting some modules each year helped me to adapt my studies to my interests, making my learning experience more meaningful and personalised.

Placement

I was an Honorary Assitant Psychologist for a Paediatric Psychology Service during my placement year. The Paediatric Psychology Service addresses illness-related psychological disorders with the goal of reducing suffering, improving quality of life, and facilitating adherence to necessary medications. As a member of the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT) Psychology Service, I assisted Clinical Psychologists in the care of their patient groups, which includes patient contact within groups and supervised sessions collecting questionnaire data. I also used my expertise for auditing, policy and service management, as well as service development.

Extracurricular activities

I was an active member of the Hockey society. Every week, I attended training sessions and competed in games against other universities. The games were accompanied by frequent social events, such as formal termly dinners where everyone dressed up and ate an elegant dinner together. These events were always fun and memorable. Joining this group was an excellent opportunity to meet new people, and the friendships I formed will last a lifetime.

What is your current role and what do? What do you enjoy most about your role?

I plan to complete a master's degree in health psychology at Bath University in order to gain more practical experience and improve my qualifications. This master's degree will better prepare me for a doctorate in clinical psychology. My ultimate objective is to become a practicing clinical psychologist, and this master's programme is a necessary step towards that goal.
