What is a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan?

This is a form of UK Government loan made available to doctoral students residing in England or Wales. This loan could help towards your course and living costs.

How much funding can I get?

  • You could get a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan of up to £28,673 (for 2023/24 academic year).
  • Your loan will be spread out across all academic years of your course, paid in three instalments at the start of each term.

Am I eligible?

  • There are eligibility restrictions, including that you be a UK national or Irish Citizen or have 'settled status' under the EU Settlement Scheme or Indefinite leave to remain, with no restrictions on how long you can stay in the UK. Visit the Government website below for the full eligibility criteria.

When and how much do I repay?

  • You will have to start repaying your loan once you have competed your PhD and your annual income is above £21,000. Once you start earning above £21,000 you will be subject to a 6% deduction for repayment towards your loan. This will be automatically deducted from your salary if you have an employer. If you are self-employed, you will need to make the repayments yourself.
