My Student Journey Studying Transport Management
Find out about why Joel chose to study at Aston and his key highlights
Why did you decide to study Transport at Aston University?
Aston was the best choice for myself as it is in the heart of Birmingham, with its major transport infrastructure and links, creating opportunities to see and understand the many facets of transport and its management, through the perspective of the West Midlands, while learning about it on the course.
What made you choose Transport as an area of study?
I have had a life-long passion for transport and wanted to pursue it as a career, although I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do in the transport industry. I chose to study BSc Transport Management at Aston as I hoped it would give me a good overview of the industry, which could help me decide which area I wanted to go into as a career. The course has done exactly that.
What is your current job role, and how do you feel Aston helped you achieve this?
My current job role is Train Planning Support at South Western Railway. Aston helped me to achieve this as I went on my placement year for the course with South Western Railway in Train Planning, getting the support I needed to do my placement search, through to my application, and also gaining knowledge on the course itself. I got on well at South Western Railway and was successful in an application for a full-time role upon graduation, and I’m now looking to progress my career in train planning.
What has been your highlight of studying at Aston University?
There have been many highlights from studying at Aston University, from very supportive tutors and staff, a fantastic Careers and Placements team, a friendly campus, and social events at places such as the MLK Chaplaincy, to the opportunities Birmingham has to offer, both in terms of transport and also for leisure and recreation.
What advice would you give to someone who was considering studying your course at Aston?
I would 100% undertake this course if you are thinking about it, and also a career in the transport industry. It gives you a great overview of everything in transport and the business environment that you need to have a good understanding of for a career in the industry, and it also helps you make a start in the industry through the placement year.
