My journey as an international student

Hear from Durga as she talks to us about studying MSc Construction Management Engineering at Aston University, as an international student...

I chose Aston University for its strong reputation and high ranking in engineering and management programs, particularly for its practical and industry-oriented approach to education.

The MSc in Construction Management and Engineering appealed to me due to its comprehensive curriculum that addresses both the technical and managerial aspects of construction projects. Additionally, Aston's close ties with the industry and excellent employability statistics were key factors in my decision. The diverse student body and the vibrant city of Birmingham further enhanced the university's appeal. I was also awarded the "Women in Engineering" scholarship which significantly motivated me, as it aligned with my personal goals and values.

How did you prepare for your move to Birmingham?

Academically, I thoroughly researched the MSc in Construction Management and Engineering programme and prepared for the academic requirements and expectations. I brushed up on my technical skills and familiarised myself with relevant software tools to ensure I was ready for the coursework.

Personally, I arranged accommodation in advance and sorted out all necessary documents, including my student visa and travel arrangements. I also did a lot of research on Birmingham and what life would be like there.

To build a support network, I connected with other students through social media groups and reached out to Aston alumni on LinkedIn to learn about their experiences and gather useful tips. I also packed some food that reminded me of home, knowing it would help with any feelings of being homesick.

Can you describe your experience with the UK visa application process and any challenges you faced specifically as an Aston student?

I found th UK visa application process okay,  I gathered all required documents, including my offer letter from Aston University, proof of finances, test results, and English proficiency test scores.

One challenge I found was ensuring all documents met the exact specifications required by the UKVI, but Aston’s international office provided excellent guidance, clarifying any doubts and supporting me through the process. There were some delays due to the massive applications which added some stress but staying organised and starting early helped mitigate issues.

The city's mix of historic and contemporary architecture also added to its charm. The support from the university staff and the welcoming atmosphere made my transition smoother than expected.

How have you found the process of settling into life in Birmingham and adapting to the local culture?

The process of settling in was relatively smooth. There were a few cultural differences to get used to, but overall the city was very welcoming. I embraced local customs and participated in university events and local festivals, which helped me adapt to the culture. I was able to make friends, explore the city and integrate into the local community quite easily.

The friendly nature of the locals and the support from Aston’s student services also played a crucial role in my smooth adaptation. I wouldn’t ask for a better city to live in as a student, it is like my second home now.
