From 1st January 2021, the UK has now officially withdrawn from the European Union. If you have been granted pre-settled or settled status in the UK, you will continue to retain work rights and can work while you are studying here. However, if you have not, and will require a "Student Visa" to study in the UK, then you must adhere to the Student Visa Working conditions. More information here.

Do I need to do anything before I start working in the UK?

Make sure you apply for your National Insurance number (NINO). You do not need to have received your NINO before starting work, but you must obtain one when you get a job. Find out more on our NINO webpage.

For most students, there are no further requirements and your employer should accept your passport or ID card as proof of nationality and your right to work.

What will happen after Brexit?

Working rights for EU citizens in the UK will be affected by the outcome of Brexit. Please see our main web page for Europe for Brexit updates and how EU students will be affected.
