Birmingham is a city where innovation thrives and opportunities are endless. It is home to global businesses and innovative entrepreneurs, and one of the youngest and most diverse populations in Europe. A £105bn thriving economy with highly successful graduates, Birmingham is a hub of growth and creativity.

A city of pioneers

With a rich history of invention, Birmingham is a city of pioneers that now leads in life sciences, fintech and digital technologies. This city is buzzing with potential and has ambitious plans to demonstrate its presence as a hub of innovation on a global scale. But ideas, opportunities and ambition need space to grow and reach new heights.

The Birmingham Knowledge Quarter is the place where this will happen. It is a government-backed space, as a part of the West Midlands Investment Zone, that will deliver a bold vision for Birmingham’s future. By investing in life sciences, digital technology and inclusive growth the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter partners (of which Aston University is one) will shape a globally significant ecosystem that draws talent, inspires discovery and revitalises communities.

Ambitious growth plans

The Birmingham Knowledge Quarter is at the heart of Birmingham’s ambitious growth plans as a city, connecting the Central Business District towards the east of the city. It is closely connected to multiple other strategic investment sites across Birmingham including the Digbeth Creative Quarter, the Tyseley Environmental Enterprise District and Knighthead’s Sports Quarter.

Through the work taking place in the Birmingham Innovation Precinct, Aston University is one of a number of partners driving innovation and growth within the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter.

The Birmingham Innovation Precinct

The Birmingham Innovation Precinct is an innovation cluster, based on the quadruple-helix model, which integrates academia, industry, government, and communities to create a globally significant hub of collaboration and innovation. By co-locating stakeholders, the precinct fosters digital innovation, improves health equity, drives skills development, and accelerates the transition to net-zero emissions. Aston Business Hub is one of the key initiatives Aston University is driving as a part of the Birmingham Innovation Precinct.

The Birmingham Innovation Precinct, based within the Knowledge Quarter, is a part of the Birmingham node of the government-backed West Midlands Investment Zone. The West Midlands Investment Zone draws on an unprecedented range of tools to support economic growth: it will transform the regional economy, creating over 30,000 jobs, catalysing £5.5bn of private sector investment and generating £1.5bn of business rate growth to be reinvested into the region.
