We asked English Language and Literature graduate, Maryam Choudhury, about her time at Aston University.

Why did you choose to study at Aston University and why did you choose your course?
I enjoyed studying English Language and Literature at A Levels and wanted to pursue English further at university.
The open day was a perfect opportunity for me to gain a glimpse of what it would be like to study at Aston University and helped me in making my decision of studying English here.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
Studying English at Aston University allowed me to explore a wide range of modules which were simultaneously engaging and challenging. I thoroughly enjoyed how the course enabled me to integrate elements of both language and literature which suited my individual interests.
Tell us about your placement year
My placement at a local primary school provided me with the opportunity to apply the transferable skills I had gained at university within a professional environment as a teaching assistant.
My job responsibilities included leading guided reading sessions, supporting students with special educational needs and providing one-to-one and group sessions.
I found that the placement project had enabled me to develop my research skills and explore my personal interest in children's reading attitudes within a real-world context. This helped me gain confidence in carrying out my own research and was valuable experience for my final year dissertation project.
What would you say to a student thinking of studying English Language and Literature at Aston University?
The cohort of lecturers within the English department at Aston University are specialists in their field bringing in-depth insight whilst teaching. I found that the feedback hours made available to students extremely helpful!
The English Language and Literature course has a diverse range of modules designed to allow students to tailor their studies to their individual interests. From my personal experience of studying English at Aston University, I found that the course structure allowed me to find modules I really enjoyed!
