Aston University graduate makes a flying start with the Scouts
Hi, I’m Emily and I studied Sociology and Social Policy at Aston University.
Since I’ve graduated, I’ve been working as a media relations officer at The Scouts Association. I’ve had an amazing amount of responsibility even though I haven’t been here that long.
One particular project that I really enjoyed working on was with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as part of our Promise to the Planet campaign, which surrounded the COP26 environmental summit. We were focused on showcasing what The Scouts are doing themselves to make environmental and sustainable changes to help fight climate change.
How did studying at Aston University help your career?
My time at Aston University really helped me, especially my placement year in giving me responsibility that I’ve never experienced before and gaining confidence.
It gives you that real on-the-job experience and it makes you stand out against other students and candidates.
Was it easy to meet new people at Aston University?
There were always people about, always things to do and so many clubs and societies to join.
I was social secretary and then president of the Aston University Running Club, it was amazing to meet new people. We had people who were brand new to running and then people who were really experienced. It was just a great way to meet new people and to share a common love.
The connection with friends was almost instant. As soon as I moved into my flat, I got to know my flatmates and we created this really close bond. It really is that friend for life feeling that you get at Aston University.

The vibes on campus were so welcoming.
For anyone considering going to Aston University, I couldn’t recommend it enough. It made me who I am today and I’m really proud of that.
