In this applied module, MA Forensic Linguistics students participate in hands-on projects, bridging academic research with real-world challenges.

From crafting guidance for police transcribers to analysing social media engagement with high-profile campaigns, students learn to ethically and effectively apply linguistic analysis in professional settings.

Through immersion in legal contexts, they refine their ability to analyse language under time constraints, preparing for impactful work in the field. This module develops skilled practitioners equipped to make meaningful contributions in forensic linguistics.

Having experience with both an assessed presentation and a client presentation is an aspect unique to the PAFL module. The former delves deeper into the technicalities of concepts in forensic linguistics, while the latter allows learners to experience firsthand what it is like to be a forensic linguist — conversing with different kinds of people and helping them achieve the pursuit of justice."

Practical Applications of Forensic Linguistics gives students the opportunity to work in small groups designing and delivering a research project to a non-academic client (real or imagined). Producing research with ‘real world’ applications and communicating academic findings to non-academic audiences are important skills in many disciplines, but particularly so in forensic linguistics where our aim with everything we do is to use language analysis to improve the delivery of justice."
