What course did you study?
How has this internship benefitted you?
The internship not only helped me demonstrate my knowledge of the law from my course but enhanced it. I was able to put to into practice what I had been taught in lectures and seminars.
You partook in a virtual internship at Linklaters, could you tell us about your experience?
I partook in a virtual internship programme at Linklaters, a renowned global law firm, via InsideSherpa over the summer. As a university student who is looking to pursue a career in the legal industry, this was the perfect opportunity to gain real work experience, especially in the middle of a pandemic. I was fortunate to be able to complete sample work that trainees and lawyers complete daily, for example, creating pitches, conducting due diligence and leaving voicemails for clients. This was important to me because it gave me an invaluable insight into the industry and helped me develop practical skills, which I can now demonstrate at future career prospects.
What did you learn from the internship?
From this internship, I was able to develop many skills such as legal research, contract review, and resourcefulness, but the most important skill I enhanced was my commercial awareness. This is because it is something most, if not all law firms, are looking for in future trainees – the ability to stay up to date on developments in the business world. This programme helped me learn how to be better informed and better researched. This has given me the confidence to apply to vacation schemes because I have previous experience and as I was able to compare my sample work to model answers, I know what is to be expected. It is amazing to see that the skills I learned from this internship were multi-sectoral, which is a valuable asset.
How did your experience at the internship tie into your studies of law?
The internship not only helped me demonstrate my knowledge of the law from my course but enhanced it. I was able to put to into practice what I had been taught in lectures and seminars. The transferable skills I gained from the internship also helped me in my studies of law as my assignments entailed producing presentations and reports advising clients. I was able to complete these assignments to a good standard because I had previous experience from the internship.
How did you find out about the opportunity and what was the application process?
I found out about the opportunity by simply searching for legal virtual internships online on Google, which led me to InsideSherpa. It connected me to the Linklaters programme where I was able to register via email. Once I was registered, all I had to do was carry out the tasks listed. This is an incredible opportunity for all students regardless of the course they are doing, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic because it shows you were able to use your time wisely and productively. I would highly recommend students look into virtual internships because most of them allow you to complete the tasks at your own pace. This means that you can effectively balance your studies with work experience opportunities.
