Hi, I'm Lucy Baines and I studied BSc Business and Management at Aston University. I am from the west of London and I head up communications for Hiscox USA. I lead both external and internal communications, work with the reporters and get to lead strategic change projects. It really gives me a buzz just going into the office every day.
Why did you choose to study Business and Management?
I originally chose to study Business and Management because I wasn't quite sure where I wanted to go in my career path, but I knew I enjoyed business, psychology, and marketing. Business and Management gives you the choice to study an array of different topics, giving you more options for what you want to do later on in life. The course is fantastic because the content is very much based on real world examples. So rather than just taking the theory, they're actually applying it to what happens within companies and businesses worldwide.
Why did you choose to study at Aston University?
One of the things I particularly remember about Aston university is the lecturers. They're very passionate about the topics they teach. They have the real-world examples and that really gets you motivated and draws you into the course.
One of the reasons I chose Aston University is the fantastic opportunities it gives you for the placement year. I was lucky enough to spend my placement year with IBM and I put that down to attending Aston University because they have a really, really great relationship with IBM and other big-name brands. After IBM, I went on to do the future leadership graduate scheme at Nissan. This then led me to go down the finance route and here I am today.
How did Aston benefit your career development?
The adage about New York really is true, that if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. The pace of life is fast and furious, but I wouldn't be anywhere else. Without my degree at Aston University, I wouldn't be standing here right now. The placement year was the first steppingstone to getting a really great graduate scheme and then going on to where I am right now.
