Protein Package is an online pick and mix store for healthy snacks and nutritional supplements.
Between finishing A-Levels and just before starting as a student at Aston University I decided to make a lifestyle change to eat better foods and exercise more.
After starting my health journey, I soon got a taste for healthy snacks and nutritional sports supplements like Grenade Protein Bars and Indie Bay Low-Calorie Crisps. However, the snacks I enjoyed came as expensive individual products or in large boxes and tubs that left me stuck with the same flavour for weeks. With £300 of birthday savings to my name, the idea came... Protein Package.
After teaching myself how to build a website and all £300 invested in our first batch of products, after no time at all, we had our first sale - the rest is history!
At Protein Package you can now mix and match all your favourite individual healthy snacks or supplements and get them shipped straight to your door.
As the business started to organically grow, I started at Aston University in 2017 and decided to use my work placement year to scale the business so that upon finishing my degree, I could make it a full-time job.
Working with BSEEN on the Aston Enterprise programme provided me with invaluable business networking opportunities, on-the-job learning experiences plus access to workshops and talks from industry leaders providing me ideas that I could implement into my business.
I was able to access a £500 grant from the scheme which at the time, allowed me to increase advertising and marketing which I didn’t have the cash flow to support in the past. This broadened our horizons and provided access to thousands of potential customers via online marketing platforms such as Facebook, Google and Criteo.
After spending the 2020 placement year scaling the business, utilising BSEEN’s and the Enterprise schemes resources, I successfully grew the business to a point at which I could continue it full-time after completing my university studies.
Now in 2021, after studying in evening lectures and running the business during the day, I finally finished university - earning a first-class business degree from Aston. Protein Package is still growing rapidly and is expected to surpass £1million in turnover this upcoming financial year. We’ve just moved into a new state-of-the-art distribution facility in Bridgnorth to improve delivery speeds and we are well on the way to becoming one of the bigger players in the health foods market. Who knows what’s next?
For anyone reading these case studies and considering starting a business of their own or working with BSEEN/Enterprise, the best advice I could give would be to - just go for it! You’ll learn along the way and make some mistakes but if you’re open to putting in the hard work and passionate about something, I’m sure you’ll make a success of it. So get cracking!
