The main reason why I chose Aston University was for the combined course of both Sociology and Business. I felt that it was important that I not only understood complex businesses situations but that I was also able to demonstrate an understanding of both people and society, an important factor in any organisation. I also knew that it was crucial that I left University with relevant work experience; therefore the four year sandwich course that Aston offered seemed like the perfect combination for me. I can safely say that I have loved every minute of my time with Aston; LSS has provided me with the perfect lifestyle balance, challenging me academically whilst allowing me to have an active social life. As Aston is located in the city centre I have been lucky enough to lead a campus lifestyle in an urban city. Birmingham is a vibrant place, there is a student night for everyday of the week, great restaurants located in Brindley Place and China Town, as well as music venues such as the NEC and O2 Academy - all in all there is always something to do! Although the transition from A-level study to degree level learning has often been described as challenging, the support offered by the LSS department was excellent. The majority of my sociology lecturers know me personally, a rare trait in higher education, and are always happy for me to approach them to talk about theoretical concepts. It has been this guidance and personal approach to teaching that has made my course so enjoyable.
As my main goal was to not only leave University with a degree but was to also improve my employability skills I have undertaken two work placements. It is a well known fact that as well as academic performance Graduate Recruiters look for relevant work experience and therefore I completed my first 12 month placement at a creative undergraduate agency in London, as a Marketing and Sales Executive. I had a fantastic time on placement as this was an opportunity to put elements of my sociology degree into practice and receive a full time salary! As Aston is an internationally recognised University, I was fortunate enough to have friends in LSS completing placements abroad and made several trips to cities such as Paris to visit them. An opportunity that I would not have had under normal circumstances! After leaving London I went on to complete a further 3 month internship with AkzoNobel, the owners of Dulux as a Marketing Brand Manager. My 15 month experience means that I am ahead of most other graduates; I am able to communicate with others effectively, take on vast amounts of responsibility and use my LSS experiences to solve business related problems.
Overall, as well as enabling me to study a subject that I love, LSS has allowed me to consider life after University. I have recently secured a graduate position with a multinational organisation and I am under no illusions that it was my dynamic degree choice and work experience that led to this offer.
