  • Type of qualification: honours degree programme delivered in Singapore through a collaboration between Aston University, UK, and the East Asia Institute of Management (EASB), Singapore.
  • Mode of delivery: Part time.
  • Duration: 18 months.
  • Start date: There are up to four in-takes to the course per year (October, January, April and July).
  • Format: Students with appropriate diploma qualifications will enter the course at stage 2, and will undertake 240 credits of study in an 18 month period.
  • Qualification gained: On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded with a BSc Medical Bioscience by Aston University.
  • Admission requirements: Students with approved diplomas in Medical Bioscience or related disciplines will be admitted to stage 2 of the program. Students will normally be required to hold an approved diploma, and a GCSE in English. Students without an appropriate GCSE qualification will need to take IELTS or TOEFL test.

As a Medical Bioscience student, you will take six blocks of study, arranged into three 80 credit semesters. Each semester is of 6 months duration, ensuring that the course can be completed in 18 months. 

Semester A

Block 1

  • Human Physiology: provides a detailed study of the mechanisms and processes through which the body achieves and maintains homeostasis.
  • Cell Biology: provides a basic introduction to cellular components and processes involved in the birth, life and death of cells.
  • Biomedical Key academic skills: provides the student with the opportunity to develop key academic research skills in preparation for their inderpendent learning during the course, and their research project.
  • Molecular Biology: provides students with a basic introduction to the nature, properties, structure, function and replication of genes.

Block 2

  • Immunology: provides the student with an understanding of the immune system as an integrated system of tissues, cells and molecules.
  • Medical Biochemistry: provides a detailed study of the application of chemical and biochemical methods to the study of disease.
  • Metabolism: provides the student with an understanding of major pathways of intermediary metabolism and their integration and regulation.
  • Endocrinology: provides a detailed study of the endocrine system, extending and developing information covered in earlier parts of the course

Semester B

Block 3

  • Molecular Pathology: examines some of the molecular mechanisms involved in cell growth, differentiation, maturation and senescence.
  • Cellular Pathology: provides students with a comprehensive overview of the key concepts, techniques and current laboratory practice in histopathology and cytopathology thereby allowing students to develop an understanding of the role this discipline plays in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of disease.
  • Molecular Genetics: aims to progress students through a study of molecular genetics as associated with prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

Block 4

  • Microbiology: provides the student with an introduction to bacterial physiology, pathogenicity, infectious diseases and clinical microbiology.
  • Clinical and Food Microbiology: provides a comprehensive view of the pathogenesis and diagnosis of infectious disease within the community and hospital setting and a study of the relationship between food and health including the scientific, technical and manufacturing factors which influence food quality and safety.

Semester C

Block 5

  • Biological Basis of Human Disease: considers the basic biological principles underlying the development of diseases in humans including obesity, cancer, motor neurone diseases, growth disorders, disease of the heart, liver, lungs, gastrointestinal tract and kidneys.
  • Applied and Molecular Biology: provides students with an introduction to the nature, properties, structure, function and replication of genes and an in-depth explanations of genetic engineering techniques and their applications.
  • Clinical Haematology / Transfusion Science: provides an in depth study of pathophysiology of haematological disorders
  • Biomedical research project: students will undertake a research project using the systematic review methodology.  Research projects will be undertaken on topics relevant to biomedical science practice and will address the evidence base for practice.

Block 6

  • Biomedical Technology: provides an insight into the importance of tissue culture and enzymology in Biomedical Science.
  • Advanced Immunology: builds on information learnt in teaching block 2.
  • We use a range of assessment methods, although the typical methods are coursework and an end of year examination.
  • Exams generally take the form of an unseen essay, short answer and multiple choice questions, and in-silico practicals.
  • Learning materials are provided through Aston virtual learning environment.
  • Students' learning is also supported by tutorials delivered by EASB.

A virtual learning environment used general study, revision and assessment. This platform allows you to access a comprehensive range of study materials, up to date key texts, scientific journals, e-journals, databases and much more.
