Course outline:
The Professional Engineering course is a progression pathway with 120 credits weighting, designed to give a route from foundation degrees to a BEng. It is offered to those who hold 240 credits from Aston Foundation Degree (or equivalent). The course provides the advanced engineering knowledge and understanding needed to qualify for incorporated engineer (IEng) status, and helps with building the range of practical competences also needed for IEng.

The programme has three core modules totalling 60 credits.  Students will then choose 60 credits from a list of modules.

Duration:
2 years’ work based blended distance learning

Location of course:
All learning and teaching is undertaken through Distance Learning using a Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard). You will also be allocated two Supervisor who will visit you in the workplace to help guide you through your studies.  There will be a requirement to attend Aston University for an induction, to sit examinations and attend optional short tutorials.  Any attendance at the University is usually arranged on Saturdays. 

Induction days 2017:
All new students must attend the compulsory induction days which will be held at Aston University on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th September 2017.

Entry requirement:

A Foundation Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.  Applicants must be in full time employment and have the support of their employer.  We understand that some engineers may not have completed a Foundation Degree (or equivalent qualification) and therefore do not meet the entry requirements.  However, if you do have at least 180 credits from previous qualifications in a relevant engineering discipline, then we may be able to offer you the opportunity to complete a Portfolio of Evidence.  If the Portfolio is successfully completed, then you will be offered a place on this Bachelors programme.  For further information please email eas_apec@aston.ac.uk

Tuition fees:
Total tuition fee is £9,250. If the programme is taken over two years, then the fee payable is £4,625 per year. Payment by instalments is available to students paying their own fees.

Learning & teaching

Learning and teaching is undertaken through Distance Learning using a Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard) using the following:

Upon completion of this programme students have the opportunity to apply for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status and progress to the MSc Professional Engineering course, which, upon completion, allows students to apply for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

The BEng Professional Engineering course is approved, delivered and managed by Aston University, but support for and recognition of the course is much broader, to address shortages in different disciplines i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Gas and Oil, Electrical Engineering, Instructions & Control, The Environment and Industrial Pollution

The concept behind BEng Professional Engineering was developed by the Engineering Council (ECUK), the overall regulator of the engineering profession in the UK, with UK government support www.engc.org.uk. This programme was developed according to the Engineering Council framework.  

  • Ability to perform skilfully and professional at workplace
  • Progression towards related professional institutions membership and chartered professional status

As part of the BEng we will work with you to draw up a plan for achieving the full range of personal development expected of an Incorporated Engineer under UKSPEC (the UK standard for professional engineering competence). As well as technical competence, this includes the ability to provide technical and commercial leadership, strong interpersonal/communication skills, and a personal commitment to professional standards, society in general and the environment.

Dr Nagi Fahmi

Dr Nagi Fahmi is a staff member of the Power Engineering System Group at Aston University, UK. He is currently Course Director of the Professional Engineering (Power Systems) programme. He has been Member of the Institution of Engineering & Technology and Chartered Engineering since 1993. His research focuses on power system analysis and power system control.
