Common First Year

'The Common First Year is very important, as we learn about a range of subjects and don’t just specialise in one field, which means that I am more ‘business aware’. We study twelve modules in the first year but some universities only offer three or four subjects, so this wider range is more challenging.'

Subuola Akinkube, 2nd year Business and Management student.

The Common First Year is studied on almost all* Aston Business School undergraduate degree programmes and is designed to give students a broad knowledge of business and management.

The common first year greatly expands the range of your knowledge beyond that of your chosen specialism; many employers seek graduates with good 'all round' knowledge of a range of business functions. The broad range of subjects studied ensures that our graduates are some of the most employable in the country.

The common first year also gives you the opportunity to switch courses at the end of the first year if you discover that you would prefer to study on a different specialism that you have studied in the first year.

Additionally this approach makes for a far more social first year in which you will meet and work with other students from across the whole business school and not just your chosen area.

Details of all of the modules studied on the common first year are available on our course pages.
