Naomi - Final year BSc Business

Having always been highly ambitious and passionate about business, my college lecturers suggested Aston University to me as it is one of the top Business Schools in Europe as well as the UK, and is highly acclaimed among employers. I visited several different University Open Days but Aston was by far my favourite; I loved the close, friendly atmosphere combined with the buzz of being in a big city.

Despite my high expectations, Aston has always exceeded them; when I first moved in I was greeted by five aunties (older students who are employed to look after first years and help them settle in); who swiftly carried all my stuff to my accommodation including many, many pairs of shoes!

As well as having the tough job of carrying first year’s belongings to their room, the aunties also organise and help out at Fresher’s Week; a whole week of parties with different themes each night! From Superhero night to School Daze and Beach Party - this week is brilliant to get to know fellow students as well as the surroundings in a safe environment.

As well as providing a brilliant social life, Aston also offers a range of excellent business courses which allow as much or little specialism as is desired. The mix of both practical and theoretical content makes the course interesting and exciting. One of my favourite modules involved creating a marketing campaign for GlaxoSmithKline’s brand Horlicks. It involved working with Billington Cartmell (a top London marketing agency) to formulate a schedule for advertising, public relations and sales promotions activity, and finished with a presentation to managers at both the agency and GlaxoSmithKline. Other modules include computer simulations where students run their own businesses in groups, which is a fun way to apply the theory learnt. Lecturers have offices on campus so students can see them for help as often or little as they like; I’m sure some of my lecturers were sick of seeing me every week!

The placement year is an incredible experience which really motivated me to get through my final year. I worked at Toyota as the Lexus Brand Assistant; my role was to provide marketing support to the dealerships as well as to conduct market research on new vehicles. Highlights of my time was organising focus groups for the Japanese Chief Engineers as well as creating the Lexus Product Guide which dealers use up and down the country to aid their sales process.

My time at Aston University has been the best years of my life and I have made many close friends who I hope to stay in contact with. Now I have finished my finals, I am concentrating on gaining a graduate job in fashion buying. Having searched long and hard for my placement I know the recruitment stages well and so have found it easier to get further in the application process. The careers advisors at Aston help students even after they graduate which is really useful especially in the competitive jobs market.
