MSc in Drug Delivery

Students will gain an overview of drug delivery and have hands-on experience of pharmaceutical formulation and drug delivery. The course is also an excellent foundation for studies at the PhD level.

Entry requirements

This programme is open to suitably qualified international and UK graduates. Prospective students must possess a good Honours Degree (minimum lower 2nd class) in pharmacy, pharmaceutical science, pharmacology, physiology, physical science, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, chemical engineering, genetics, materials science, medicine, or a related field, from a recognised university or an overseas degree recognised by Aston University.

Programme outline

This programme is primarily designed to prepare students for an academic or industrial career in pharmaceutics or drug delivery. Qualified postgraduates are in significant demand, due to the continued development of highly complex and sensitive drug molecules.

The course is based around core compulsory modules and a research project. These modules cover the biology of disease states, designing drugs and delivery systems, research methods and exploiting your research.

The supervised research project will last for four months and be at the level expected for the first year of PhD studies. Examples include liposome-based drug delivery systems, strategies for enhancing drug solubility, and development of TB vaccines.

Learning, teaching & assessment

The course is assessed by a mixture of coursework, examinations, practical work and oral and written presentations. The research project module will be assessed on the basis of a submitted project report and an oral defence of a poster.

This course is designed to provide a postgraduate-level education and training for graduates seeking employment in the pharmaceutical industry. The course is also an excellent foundation for studies at PhD level. Graduates from MSc Drug Delivery have moved into areas within the pharmaceutical industry which include formulation sciences, analysis, research sciences, pre-clinical development, clinical trials and regulatory bodies (e.g. FDA, MHRA).
