MA in Applied Linguistics

''My undergraduate degree was in Modern Languages (very many years ago!) from Somerville College, Oxford. After a long career in business – specifically Market Research – and three children, I was looking at a possible change of career into university teaching. I returned to something I had been particularly interested in all those years ago, which was Linguistics.

We live fairly centrally, and I had a good choice of universities, but I chose Aston because of its strong reputation for Linguistics, because of the coverage of the MA programme, and because they were so welcoming and positive when I came in, slightly nervously, for a chat beforehand! The taught MA programme was the right mix for me of guidance and independent study, with some of the leading scholars in the field (which turned out not to be as daunting as it sounds!).

The atmosphere is very much one of making contacts, joining in with projects and looking outwards. My MA course at Aston helped me fall in love with language all over again. I was lucky enough to be able to carry out some teaching both in business and in English at Aston – and this has allowed me to pursue higher education teaching with more confidence. I am now enrolled as a doctoral student in the Languages and Social Sciences School, where my topic spans the disciplines of both language and business.  I will also have the opportunity to consolidate my teaching practice formally through the Aston Certificate.''
