Professional Development Programme Module

Business skills for life: the essential Aston Professional Development Programme

The Aston Professional Development Programme (PDP) is an integral module that forms part of your MSc taught course from day one.This compulsory module runs throughout the academic year. We have designed it around knowledge through practice - to enhance your employability as you customise the PDP experience to suit your own learning goals and skills development needs.

We take a multidimensional, qualitative and individually tailored approach. Using reflective models, we integrate a competency-based framework into our existing academic programmes.  You will engage with different kinds of experiential learning, such as skills workshops, work-based experience, study abroad and develop your own unique skillset.  

This pathway between theory and the world of work brings together Aston’s faculty, careers practitioners and business and academic partnerships teams to help you step into your future careers as culturally aware, global professionals.

The learning and teaching methods used throughout the course will sharpen your oral and written skills, and your ability to make persuasive and professional presentations. Group work will also develop your negotiation and team-working skills. You will be assessed through a mixture of examinations and coursework. The taught element of the programme is then complemented by a substantial piece of research leading to the completion of a dissertation.

Dr Kristina Schmidt
Kristina is a Lecturer in Marketing at Aston Business School. She teaches market research to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and supervises MSc dissertations and placement projects. Her research interests are predominantly in the areas of consumer behaviour, research methodology and experimental design. She has presented her research at leading international conferences such as the American Marketing Association and the International Meeting of the Psychometric Society.


MSc Market Research & Consultancy (MRC) is accredited by the Market Research Society (MRS). In addition to the MSc MRC, if you pass the relevant assessments you will receive the MRS Advanced Degree in Market and Social Research Practice

At the end of the programme, you will be able to design and implement robust market research programmes, as well as interpret outcomes to the highest level, these skills are primarily used in data driven environments. Future career paths include marketing management, market research, consultancy or academia.

You will aquire skills in giving presentations, team working, report writing, negotiation and IT.

Modules taught on this MSc will enable you to develop a wide range of analytical, technical and transferable skills demanded by graduate employers in addition to knowledge and understanding of market research processes and procedures.

In addition to the standard MSc entry requirements, you must demonstrate strong analytical skills gained from a degree in a business and/ or management related, numerate or quantitative subject. We will consider an arts or humanities background, if supported by evidence of analytical ability; we may request additional tests as appropriate. Significant practical experience in a market research role will also be considered.

Entry Requirements (one of the following):

  • A good honours degree from a UK university

  • Equivalent overseas degree recognised by Aston University

  • A degree-equivalent professional qualification

As well as:

  • Evidence of experience using statistics, ideally demonstrated by a component or module of a degree level qualification or an A Level or equivalent in Mathematics

  • Two professional references – at least one must be from an academic referee

  • An official academic transcript of your university grades to date

  • A completed application form


For International Students:

  • An official academic transcript, with an official English translation, of your university grades to date

  • Students whose native language is not English will also need to satisfy our English language requirements Pre-sessional English language programmes are available for good applicants whose English qualification falls just short of these requirements.

The MSc Market Research and Consultancy is an exciting and innovative programme. It has been specifically designed to be demanding and challenging for participants. All applications will be assessed individually; however, those with demonstrable academic credentials, such as a GMAT score of over 550, will be viewed favourably.
