MSc Investment Analysis provides you with the knowledge, understanding and the skills required for a career in the financial sector, banking or investment management. There is a strong focus throughout on the practical application of finance within a trading or corporate setting. Your studies will culminate in a financial analyst evaluation of a UK listed company for your final project.

You will study equity, debt and derivative markets in domestic and international sectors, discovering how to undertake security valuation and portfolio management as well as learning about the key techniques used by financial traders. In addition, you will be encouraged to complete the Reuters Certification – an industry-recognised professional qualification.

In addition to your Aston degree, you will have the opportunity to participate in our international study exchange programme. Studying with one of our partner institutions, the programme will enhance your international experience and communication skills, preparing you for a career in the international business environment.

The modules together with the optional CFA revision sessions (free to Aston MSc Investment Analysis students) will support students also undertaking the CFA level 1 programme.

Business skills for life: the essential Aston Professional Development Programme

The Aston Professional Development Programme (PDP) is an integral module that forms part of your MSc taught course from day one.This compulsory module runs throughout the academic year. We have designed it around knowledge through practice - to enhance your employability as you customise the PDP experience to suit your own learning goals and skills development needs.

We take a multidimensional, qualitative and individually tailored approach. Using reflective models, we integrate a competency-based framework into our existing academic programmes.  You will engage with different kinds of experiential learning, such as skills workshops, work-based experience, study abroad and develop your own unique skillset.  

This pathway between theory and the world of work brings together Aston’s faculty, careers practitioners and business and academic partnerships teams to help you step into your future careers as culturally aware, global professionals.

The taught modules are assessed predominantly through examinations complemented by a substantial piece of research leading to the valuation project.

Dr Antonios Kassanis
BA, MSc, PhD 
Antonios joined Aston Business School in September 2012, having previously taught at the University of Birmingham for a number of years. His teaching experience within the Finance curriculum includes courses in International Finance, Foreign Exchange Markets, International Investments and Econometrics with Financial Applications. His research interests currently lie in the fields of Financial Economics and International Finance.

MSc Investment Analysis is accredited by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI), the largest and most widely respected professional body for those who work in the securities and investment industry in the UK and in a growing number of financial centres globally. We will support you in your studies for CISI Diploma Papers and, in the summer term, you will also have the option of attending preparation and revision classes for the CFA Level One programme.

This programme provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for a career in the financial, insurance and corporate sectors. Recent graduate positions include:

  • Auditor – PricewaterhouseCoopers (Italy)
  • Financial Analyst – Deutsche Bank (UK)
  • Investment Manager – Bank of China (China)
  • Mergers & Acquisitions Analyst – Ernst&Young (Russia)
  • Risk Capital Manager – Kazikorn Bank (Thailand).

You will acquire skills in the following areas: giving presentations; team working; report writing; negotiation and IT skills.

On successful completion of the programme you are expected to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of valuation techniques used in financial markets
  • Understand how to trade financial securities
  • Understand strategic decision-making within a financial context
  • Be able to employ risk management techniques
  • Use financial statements to analyse financial performance
  • Understand the international influences of finance.

Entry requirements

In addition to the standard MSc entry requirements, you must demonstrate quantitative and analytical skills, by having studied some finance, economics or other quantitative modules at undergraduate level.

Plus one of the following:

  • A good UK honours degree (minimum lower second class)
  • Equivalent overseas degree recognised by Aston University.

As well as:

  • Two professional references – at least one must be from an academic referee
  • An official academic transcript of your university grades to date
  • A completed application form.

For International Students:

  • An official academic transcript, with an official English translation, of your university grades to date
  • Students whose native language is not English will also need to satisfy our English language requirements 
  • Pre-sessional English language programmes are available for good applicants whose English qualification falls just short of these requirements.
